Cooking the Books, with Emily Gould: Making Malfatti with Amy Sohn
Cooking the Books, with Emily Gould, was shot and edited by Val Temple. This week's guest, Amy Sohn, is the author of Prospect Park West, a tale of four married women in baby-friendly Brooklyn. (The recipe for malfatti, should you like to play along at home, is here.) (Previously.)

Enticing … entertaining … informative. Love it.
Ok, so do we get Balk video on "how to cook a fucking steak" next?
The Internet is not ready.
3 B things I hate in one video, Breeders, Brown and Billy Joel.
My three things are the following words: "post" "natal" and "yoga."
Oh, it is way preferable to third trimester bikram yoga, trust me.
I just finished lunch and decided this comment seems antifem; what I really intended to communicate was the precarious feeling of such a thing.
Didn't sound antifem to me, just sweaty and fairly likely to induce labor!
"But you know, it's like you date a guy, and the best thing about the relationship is who he tells you to read." Dissemination.
Back/overhead lighting is a problem! Also, I recommend Diorskin nude + a little Touche Éclat under the eyes.
This series is a good idea. Cooking and kitchens, people let down their hair.
Emily is a classic beauty. It's like watching an Italian painting come to life–a flattering portrait of Christina of Sweden, say, but with more tattoos, less lace.
Goddamnit. I tried to be nice about it the last time.
Get a soundguy! I want to watch this but it's like hearing nails on a chalkboard have a chat with a broken drum brake.
You can find an NYU kid with mikes and a portable mixer on craigslist. He will record the sound for free or for cheap. If you won't do that, at least put down a carpet in the room.
Yep, we still have some kinks to work out. This goes on the list with 'getting a curtain for that stupid window' and 'getting something to light them from the FRONT'. One step at a time.
A few cup lights under the cabinets would class it up and possibly a radiator cover.
(Emily does not seem thrilled by baby talk.)
There's this kid who's been panhandling in front of the Duane Reade on 6th Ave lately who's a dead ringer for Emily Gould. Creeps me out every time I walk by him.
How many page views does he get?
EEEE!!! The food and Jay-z mash up!! MASH UP LOL
This almost makes me wish I ate.
Emily:
I've been a long-time fan and am really excited about this new venture of yours, "Cooking the Books." However, I think you might consider the production values of another great talk show and STEAL LIKE CRAZY!!!! The late, great John Candy's "The Fishin' Musician" on SCTV. I only wish the episode where he had Wendy O. Williams and the Plasmatics on was available for viewing.
That's good watchin'!
In any case, I am going to work on my novel and I swear if it's only in a Mead composition notebook, I am going to plead with you to get me on your show and maybe we can go grocery shopping or something.
It'll be fun.
OMG! I loved that. Or "Farm Film Celebrity Blow-Up" She blowed up real good..
I can’t quite deal with going from Jay-Z to Bukowski and back to Jay-Z again in that short of a time. I feel like I need some kind of half way house.
Can we please stop of at like Styx in between next time?
Getting drunk at Tempo is what a meal at Al Di La is all about. Even my half-a-glass-of-champagne-a-year father and white-wine-with-Sprite-but-only-on-my-birthday mother did this when we went there.
Also, I would just like to put it out there that peanut allergies, like eskimos and social security for anyone until 30, do not really exist.
Also this was cute.
When I lived in the BK a friend of mine commented that there seemed to be a lot more peanut allergies in the Montessori school than in public school.
Depends on the median income and education levels at your local public school.
Not so much into cooking, and only enjoy books a little, but I LOVE the intro for these videos very very much.
I'm finding Sohn profoundly dislikable here. Even before the Bukoswki-Jewel thing.
