@frontsidebus They like ordinals, generally.

"New York New York it's a helluva town, you know the Bronx is up and I'm Brooklyn down."

Smitros (#5,315)

Hm. I have no particular brief to argue on behalf of Brooklyn, but we can't ignore "Got a castle in Brooklyn, that's where I dwell" ("Brass Monkey") and the eponymous "No Sleep till Brooklyn."

Dave Bry (#422)

I was thinking "You're from Secaucus/I'm from Manhattan/You're jealous of me cuz your girlfriend is cattin'… (That is!)" from "It's the New Style," would be no. 1. But it's probably done this way, with cultural references taking precedence over geography. This is great fun.

John Ore (#7,170)

OK, here's some fine print!

1) One reference per song. Otherwise I'd have to just quote "Stop That Train" and "An Open Letter To NYC" in their entirety.

2) I tried to avoid the somewhat generic references to "Manhattan" or "Brooklyn" and such, since there are so many great ones. #29 covers the boroughs.

This unfortunately limits the list by design, so keep your favorites coming.

@John Ore What part of WITHOUT COMMENTARY don't you UNDERSTAND?

John Ore (#7,170)

@Alex Balk But? This is…the…comments section?

Dave Bry (#422)

@John Ore Oh, no! I knew that was going to get brought up. I was in blatant violation of policy. A moment of weakness!

(Also, while we're over-explaining: I left out the word "better" in the comment above. So that it should have read, "probably BETTER done this way…")

@John Ore You have to let us try to guess whether there is some method to your madness!

John Ore (#7,170)

Sonofa…! Dave! You're supposed to be a role model.

OK, minor transgression aside, you still don't know why I chose one line over another, the order, etc. So everyone carry on!

mrschem (#1,757)

aw, phooey. 'I'll stir fry you in my wok,' will always be my favorite lyric.
but I'll play along:

'Brooklyn, Bronx, Queens and Staten
From the Battery to the top of Manhattan
Asian, Middle-Eastern and Latin
Black, White, New York you make it happen'

Is Carvel a NY thing? I didn't realize.

unionjackflash (#8,506)

Shea Stadium the radium/EMD squared/kicked out of the Palladium/you think that I cared?

and they're in Brooklyn

C_Webb (#855)

"It's the taking of the Pelhams, 1-2-3"

Even though they're obviously referencing the book/movie/Bronx, this line made those of us from a tiny town in Westchester feel all cool.

i'm way late on this, but this is a two-parter: "homeboy, throw in the towel, your girl got dicked by Ricky Powell. the godfather of soul in the belly of the beast, smokin that dust at Saint Anthony's Feast." -from Car Thief (with Ricky Powell and St. Anthony's Feast being the two references). Yes!
