George Michael, "True Faith"

The George Michael charity cover of New Order's "True Faith"—an event highly anticipated by Apple head Steve Jobs—has arrived (or, at least, a preview of it has) and, well… I DON'T KNOW! Peter Frampton + Japan + barbiturates? It may be too soon to tell. WHAT DO YOU THINK?

Too slow, lazy and underwatery for me. (Sad! I still have a sneaking fondness for Wham!)

boyofdestiny (#1,243)

Agreed. Do we need so much autotune?

I'm not going to listen to this now — I'm on the edge of being crushed by tedious workplace sadism and if this isn't any good I'll go under — but I just want to register my enthusiasm for name checks on Japan.

Bittersweet (#765)

It's not any good, don't bother. But…David Sylvian FTW!

dntsqzthchrmn (#2,893)

I second that emotion.

Leave it to Auto-Tune to ruin the marriage of an incredible song to an incredible singer. Man. Today is just THE WORST.

This was my immediate reaction. Autotune? Why???

boyofdestiny (#1,243)

Great minds!

LondonLee (#922)

Me too. George has a luverly voice. Why, George, why?

Dave Bry (#422)

I feel the same way. I was very much looking forward to this cover. (God, remember how great it was when George and Mary J. did "As"?) And then, yes, this is a real day-ruiner. I can't figure it out. Not even a little bit. Autotune is for people who have BAD singing voices. It's to fix and cover over mistakes. And in nay case, whatever it's for, the world has had FAR TOO MUCH of it over the past three years. It is terrible, terrible, terrible! For something that can help make the day better, if you have not yet see the George Mason High School Band play Rage Against the Machine's "Bulls On Parade," it is worth watching: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gqG4oSfQYIY

George Mason saves George Michael. I saw what you did there. Now perhaps a clip of Michael Cera punching autotune in the dick?

tomme (#4,473)

That is a medley of Bulls/Killing in the Name, which is nothing short of awesome. (I think?)

Bittersweet (#765)

LOVE the band video, Dave, thanks! Sending it to my band/orchestra director husband forthwith.

tomme (#4,473)

FAKE!

Dave Bry (#422)

Oh, you mean, like, not actually George Michael? A hoax? That would be interesting, and make me feel better.

Also: Is George Michael wearing two pairs of sunglasses at the same time in that picture? That's kind of what it looks like.

forrealz (#1,530)

I think his sunglasses have eyelids.

Neopythia (#353)

Please let it be a fake. Please let it be a fake. Please let it be a fake.

boyofdestiny (#1,243)

Being an unreconstructed emo kid, I'm kinda partial to the Anberlin version. I don't care what you think!

los (#2,394)

Oh come on. Stop making me feel bad for loving this.

Suho (#10,336)

I'm glad to see I'm not the only one who thinks the AutoTune was completely unnecessary. For about the first twenty seconds or so I was undecided, and then the AutoTune kicked in and ruined everything.

I desperately hope that the age of AutoTune (as an "effect," that is) will soon come to an end. It's really starting to aggravate me.

I had never heard the Anberlin version before. While it is definitely better than this, I don't think it holds a candle to the original. Call me sentimental.

(Also: my first comment on the Awl! Yes, I registered just to post this. That's how much I hate the egregious use of AutoTune.)

tulip (#3,010)

Auto-tuning True Faith is blasphemous!! Gah.
