Total Dick Polling Great in Chicago Mayor Race

More data for the "celebrity is everything in modern life" bonfire: Rahm Emanuel is polling at 44% for next month's mayoral election in Chicago. This is after he got fully shamed by all the other candidates at a meeting with the Chicago Tribune editorial board. Emanuel is the only candidate that supports legislation that would make teachers unable to strike; he's also the only one who says he might push back the retirement age for city employees. He probably has some good qualities too! I mean, lots of us have sometimes benefitted from having mayors who are total dicks. Though he is, of course, a huge charter school proponent. Oh, the alluring rallying cry of "save our students, shut down the failing schools"! But who doesn't have lots of already-rich friends who are interested, as so many are, in a charter school license to print money while stealing from the future?

Except for the occasional aberration (cf. Michael Bilandic, a pretty level-headed guy who wasn't skilled at shoveling snow), the City That Works is a City of Fiefdoms, and there's no reason to believe Rahm doesn't fit the profile perfectly.

Nuts to this (#3,759)

Bilandic got to the mayorality the old fashioned way: by being the highest ranked guy in the machine when Daley died. His failure to provide basic services is a perfect example of the fiefdom system at its worst.

Well sure, but he beats the alternatives: Chico is another machine hack and Mosley Braun is a joke. The most convincing argument that I've heard for Emmanuel is that unlike Braun, Del Valle, or Chico, he's the only person who would have a power base outside of the city and wouldn't have to grovel to the party or aldermen to pass through some sort of reform.

And, temperament-based loathings aside, I wouldn't necessarily disagree. . .Gery Chico is the LAST MAN ON EARTH I'd put in charge of a large organization (see, Altheimer & Grey), and the rest are the typical collection of hacks.

This city thrives, falls, slobbers all over itself, on all of the above.

petejayhawk (#1,249)

EXACTLY. It's all well and good if you want to rip on Emanuel because of his temperament, but what's the alternative?

This is perhaps the issue when a NYC-based writer jumps to conclusions based on the only things he knows about the Chicago mayoral race; i.e., that Rahm is a dick.

But he is a dick!

But we've got a pretty good success rate with dick mayors nationally.

Also I am a former Chicago resident, from an Illinois family, so, you can stick your "coastal elitist" charges back inside your pierogies. :)

petejayhawk (#1,249)

I would prefer to stick said charges in a Pizza Puff, if that's cool with you?

QueenWasp (#926)

It's hard for Chicagoans to explain the city politics to non-Chicagoans and not sound like dicks ourselves (that's a terrible sentence, but you understand…). Rahm is, hands down, the best of the field (like exponentially better than all the others).

We are a city of assholes and so we need a superior asshole to rule over us.

petejayhawk (#1,249)

For example, I think I did a poor job of not sounding like a dick above.

More like a union rep or regional sales manager, I think. Oh wait.

Morbo (#1,288)

As a Lincoln Square resident, I happily look forward to the day that our new North Sider Overlord takes the reins.

Especially if he unbeholden to any aldermen.

Who are you voting for alderman?

Morbo (#1,288)

My vote is open. I didn't know Schulter was officially stepping down. Maybe I'll have to head over to one of the forums at Coonley or Dank Haus to figure out who says the right things.

Any suggestions?

I think you guys are being a little harsh with Choire. I think he's just making the simple point that you guys are making too, namely that Rahm is not a great guy and that he has serious deficits as a candidate. So team Awl, we're all on the same page.

dntsqzthchrmn (#2,893)

Not harsh, just territorial.

We can all agree that the alt-text on that photo is pretty much flawless, and if another alt-text is going to beat it today, it has its work cut out, right?

QueenWasp (#926)

I don't really feel like anyone is calling Choire "wrong". We are all trying to justify our support of said-dick Rahm Emmanuel for Mayor of this great city. This is what I mean by it's hard for US not to look like dicks.

Look, Rahm is a terrible public speaker. He took out any real competition he had before the race even really started using questionable tactics (Jesse Jackson Jr found himself in the middle of a sex scandal orchestrated by a known friend of Rahm, Tom Dart just bowed out with no explanation really, and I am pretty sure Rahm gave Bob Fioretti cancer). He's mean. He's shady. He is, by all accounts, a huge prick. But he's our prick.

saythatscool (#101)

Well Tom didn't have the war chest to challenge Rahm and he's one of the smartest guys when it comes to political fundraising. So Dart ducking this fight made sense to me. He could be the next senator from Illinois if he plays it right. Jesse did that shit to himself and Bob was never a remote contender. That said, I agree with you Queenie. Rahm is king dick and I welcome our new emperor.

petejayhawk (#1,249)

Fuck it, I'm joining up with Team Moseley Braun, if only for the comedy factor. I can't wait for Mayor Carol to tear up the city's parking contract and re-sign it with Sani Abacha.

deepomega (#1,720)

I'd be a lot more willing to be mad about charter schools if they hadn't worked well for everyone involved in DC. (And then been unceremoniously shut down?)

mmmark (#4,458)

There are some troubling things about this here statement!

dntsqzthchrmn (#2,893)

Enough blaming schools for poverty already.

Phil Koesterer (#2,708)

Did you consider the possibility that taking power away from teachers' unions and city employees is actually popular with voters?
