Instructions for Visiting the American Wilderness: A PowerPoint Presentation

After completing an introductory English as a First Language class this spring, "Thomas Blair" decided to become a famous writer. Alas, he discovered that all those jobs are taken. As a stop-gap, he has decided to direct a non-polemical feature-length documentary film about doping in the sport of professional bridge. He'ss that close to booking the Buffet interview. You can fall in love with Mr. Blair here.

Is this missing a slide? At some point, Mr. Blair must have stopped to savor a Gates Mixed Plate.

1. No Gates anywhere even remotely close to KCI… amirite? If there's one in the terminal, it doesn't even remotely count. 12th & Brooklyn; Linwood & Main; Paseo & Cleaver Blvd; 103rd & St.Line or GTFO.

2. The airport is about as representative of our little grass-patch as California City is representative of LA.

#HI MAY I HELP YOU.

There is an Arthur Bryant's at the airport. It is, unfortunately, very disappoint compared to real-life.

That airport is awesome. You need to arrive about 10 minutes before your flight leaves.

OH HAI KCI

Saudade.

There's that word: Suadade. I, myself am Portuguese, and have always said this prior to getting off the phone with my mother. I always interpreted it as I miss you, or I love you, never really understanding it's full meaning. Having only heard it for the first time when i moved away from home at 18. Portuguese may have been my first language, but my vocabulary isn't much more than rudimentary. It is only in the last couple of months that I've learnt this word's full meaning. I just wanted to thank you for reminding me of this. I'm off to visit my mother this long weekend and want to speak to her about it.

Thank you for teaching me that word-beautiful.

And so perfect for being in those places that are so not-home when all you want is to be home.

rook (#4,214)

Reminds me of the Greek 'nostos.'

Ingrid C (#3,596)

Jorge, you are welcome. Hope you are enjoying the visit with your mother.

Thomas, thank you for that article. The word fits it perfectly.

Bittersweet (#765)

As a former consultant, I always wanted a word like that. Thanks, Ingrid!

Is there another (in any language) to describe that almost unbearable impatience/heartstrain as you travel homeward, much too slowly?

Evian is swill and tastes faintly of carrot.

cherrispryte (#444)

To me Evian always tastes like laundry detergent?

Dave Bry (#422)

Then you come to the end.

This is amazingly good.

Rodger Psczny (#3,912)

#9 is perfect.

You think KCI is a depressing place now, you should've seen it before the remodel.

That sound of the tires is the sound of the 405 at 5 am. You are listening to Los Angeles.

Fifi (#1,639)

i like to think of it as the Great North American Outback.

The way we do American Travel Writing now?
This was great.
