I saw this one on Slate this morning too. I'm telling you, this is the new ad takeover technology. It's being heavily promoted by MediaMind. YOU WILL SEE THIS ON THE AWL.
On one occasion, I accidentally scrolled over a side banner (is there a term for that?) and it jumped out, on top of the text. Levi's, maybe?
When I worked in advertising, one fine agency built an expandable so that the "close" button was in the middle of the unit. When you clicked close your mouse was actually still on the unit, causing it to expand again. That was a fun morning.
That Evian takeover that shat pink all over Gawker a few years ago looks positively quaint and tasteful in comparison, no?
Just out of curiosity, does Ad Blocker Plus address this new technology? I just want to know because using ABP is wrong and I don't want anything to come between me and the ads that fund my favorite website….
AdBlock can exclude sites not sure Ad Blocker Plus can too. I have it setup so I see ads here but not on sites that show a lot of rich media…
You would probably have to run a Flash blocker program, where you have to specifically enable any flash content for it to run.
A pal told me to read the front page story on former government officials working as oil lobbyists, and I was greeted by this thing that looks oddly like an underwater pipe leaking oil. Is this some sort of crazy new ad/news synergy that I'm not aware of?

I have Adblocker running. I tried those sites and did not see any of that stuff.
Just for a second, I thought the guy in the lower left corner was Thomas Friedman. I hoped the hand was reaching over to crush his head.
Why is this technology being squandered on advertising? Shouldn't we all have blowjob bots by now?
