Union Square: The Final Chapter

I guess it's better than an Olive GardenYou know what? The dude that quit his blog was totally right. We knew it was coming, but there's something about seeing those stripes up there that just makes it so real. Pass the Crispy Green Bean Fries, will ya?

Could be worse. It could be an Applebees.

NicFit (#616)

At least the branding speaks to the working class' love of getting hammered on the weekend.

Art Yucko (#1,321)

We're coming to get you, one 2,000 calorie-dish at a time!

weekend?

Fridays used to be a place for successful young people to meet so they could get loaded and screw without running into either Bohemians like in the Village or your Aunt Agatha like in the Carlyle.

And if anybody actually remembers when this was the case then they are now Aunt Agatha.

This from the T.G.I. Friday web site:

"1965

The first T.G.I. Friday's restaurant opens in New York City at the corner of First Avenue and 63rd Street. T.G.I. Friday's on Manhattan's upper East Side quickly becomes THE meeting place for single adults, totaling $1 million in revenues its first year."

Just thinking about fried green beans make my heart valves constrict. If I have a heart attack I'm suing theawl!

Miles Klee (#3,657)

is it too late to move the commenters' bawl?

NicFit (#616)

Whaaaat???

Miles Klee (#3,657)

i mean move it to a city that doesn't have t.g.i.friday's

saythatscool (#101)

@Miles: French Lick, Indiana?

deepomega (#1,720)

Pyongyang.

Art Yucko (#1,321)

@deep: yeah, pass me the deep-fried Kittens.

BadUncle (#153)

FWIW, there's been a TGI's at the Empire State Building for some time. It's useful for keeping tourists away from nearby Korean barbecue.

SidAndFinancy (#4,328)

@BU: They tore one down to build the new Fulton Street Transit Center, so progress?

metoometoo (#230)

The only TGI Friday's in San Francisco is in the airport, and that's technically South San Francisco, so if you guys want to have the Bawl here that's good with me.

NinaHagen (#131)

I don't know – according to Gothamist, there's weed growing there…

SpyMagician (#2,024)

Gothamist is a bunch of cackling old biddies. That is absolutely not marijuana. It's a @$!%# Papaya plant. One variety of papaya plant has leaves that look similar, but are smoother, flatter and smaller.

SpyMagician (#2,024)

I meant to say: One variety of papaya plant has leaves that look similar, but are smoother, flatter and smaller than marijuana leaves.

HiredGoons (#603)

Ha! I fooled you all! This is just an art installation!

(sobs)

Multiphasic (#411)

You, too, can be one of Miranda July's heavy things.

HiredGoons (#603)

*clap *clap

SidAndFinancy (#4,328)

I'm looking for more of a T.G.I.M.'s at the moment.

NinaHagen (#131)

Go harvest the weed.

Gee, I remember when this building held a restaurant that specialized in textured soy protein.

Fast fucking times, people.

Aatom (#74)

In fairness, that place was a shithole.

Aatom (#74)

This will make trips to the Greenmarket so much more convenient for the cooking staff.

hman (#53)

Hah. Oh boy.

Looks like someone's got a case of the Mondays.

BadUncle (#153)

You need more flair on this post.

HiredGoons (#603)

Soon we will all be required to wear flare.

SpyMagician (#2,024)

Have you seen the 1" buttons hipsters are willfully wearing? Whoomp, THERE IT IS!!!

SpyMagician (#2,024)

Ummm, sorry to sound like a slightly older than thou kind of guy, but how does this indicate the change of anything?

Whatever restaurant was there before was actually the first sign of the neighborhood gentrifying back in the day. Before that restaurant was there, there was a pizza place and a donut place. The donut place sold "Boasted Cream Donuts" and the pizza place would force anyone who used their bathrooms without buying anything to buy a slice or coffee. I know. I did that a few times when I got drunk with friends in Union Square Park after work back in the late 1980s.

Is there still a city employment/unemployment office there down deeper on the block? Because I remember trips with my parents there back in the day. We'd go to "May's" where the "Whole Foods" is now before heading home with whatever paperwork my parents needed.

Sorry folks, but you don't know from what the neighborhood once was.

BadUncle (#153)

I'm old enough to remember the Coffee Shop being a coffee shop. And Union Square filled with junkies.

SpyMagician (#2,024)

Yes! Coffee Shop! I stopped there a lot back in the day. Great old counters and less skanks than nowadays. Remember the "Book Review" restaurant?

Awww, look at us!

Ever since the last piano retailer moved out and FSG moved in that square has been a dump.

Bittersweet (#765)

Not to crow or anything, but the Applebee's in my Boston exurb just closed and a new high-end Mediterranean cafe is opening in a few weeks.

(Ha ha.)

OMG, you are so lucky! I love Olive Garden!
