Friskies Exec Insanely Explains Their Insane Ads

CAT THE CAT TRIPPING HIS TINY CAT BALLS OFFYou are going to need to get a load of this: an explanation of the infamous Friskies 'Adventureland' commercial. "Feeding wet," as [Susan] Schlueter calls it, can for some owners be a highly ritualized and intimate pet interaction. The pop of the can primes kitty for excitement. The scents that escape set feline nostrils aflutter. This is a time for cats and owners to bond over a heap of moist, processed meat. And, according to Schlueter, many owners like to imagine what their cats are feeling and thinking during these moments of culinary ecstasy…. Schlueter says the target is 'owners who are very involved with their cats, and have a deep relationship with their cats. These are owners who love to get inside and experience the magical world their cats experience.'" That's weird, because I am that sad freak who wants to experience the magical cat world with my cat, and that is why I feed him a decent cat food!

It IS a moment of ecstasy for the cat, not unlike shooting drugs for humans.

It is NOT a "bonding time" with the cat. It is the cat's siren wail and eventual oneness with the canned food that causes the drama of that situation. Most cats would bitchslap their owners across the room to get to the smack.

Ahh, pleeease. Your cat is just stroking your ego with all that purry-purry/strokey-rubby business. In their heads they are saying,"Less talky, more foody."

What they're thinking after the colon:

Coincidentally, reading that article has given me the same uncomfortable feeling one might get after staring into the mirror whilst on acid.

Oh sweet Jesus I'd forgotten about that feeling.

I, too, enjoy the magic cat universe. The best part is when Dusty does kind of a little turn as get the bowl out.

Also: if you want ridiculously healthy over-the-top cat food, give Nature's Variety frozen raw food a whirl.

My cat prefers Feline's Pride, but yes, a raw diet for animals is the way to go. The paucity of stoves found in nature is telling.

Forget cats: me and my family bond over a heap of moist, processed meat every night. Mmmmmm.

Choire, what do you feed Cat?

Last time I saw that commercial my dog happened to glance up at the television. She briefly went closer to the screen, then backed away, barked once, and left the room until she was sure it was over. I assume she is greatful I don't feed her hallucinogenic slaughterhouse by-products, but I can't be sure since we don't have a lot of ritualized feeding moments together.

I make a Flehman's response when I see those ads.

This is one of those times when I'm really glad I'm a dog person.

'bond over a heap of moist, processed meat.'

That's what she said.

I figured this out a month ago. 'Meow Mix' destroyed cat food ads 30 years ago and they've been struggling ever since!

talk about a targeting fail. if they are going after the people who are so in tune with their pets that they feed them weruva or tikicat, they sure as FUCK aren't giving them friskies or fancy feast. i mean, really. ridiculous. that is a marketing person who should be canned. and then fed to the lions. the maine coon lions.

I enjoy time with my cats so much I'd often rather stay home with them than deal with human beings. But I'm not imagining they're having any acid trip moments when eating their dinner, any more than I have them when eating my Trader Joe's Sad Lonely Loser frozen dinner.

If this is what a cat sees before it even starts eating its food I wonder what a dog sees while it's right in the middle of licking another dog's butt.

I had a cat for 27 years (yes 27 years) that ate only dry food, with the occasional hunted bird it would not eat. It would not accept wet food if you offered it to her.
