I like this species of–is there a name for it?–conscience art(?). The whole semi-primitive hand-lettered deal with social commentary either implied or stated outright. It all looks like it has been ripped out of some really cool art student's sketchbook.

I had a talented friend in SF named Tucker who worked this way, with maybe a little more Keith Haring built in.

It's like the Sunday Color Comics!

  3. Jef [#1843]

I love this. Especially the McNulty. He looks so kindly!

  4. sigerson [#179]

Can do an other McNulty where he was banging that chick bent over the hood of a car? A squad car rolled up and hit the rollers, so McNulty (without pausing his pumping motion) fished out his badge and waved the car off and went back to his business.

Best of all entries. Makes everyone else's OOs retrospective ugly, literally AND (for the most part) figuratively.

I disagree, in that the others adhere to one of the first "rules" of art making, namely the correspondence of manner and matter. I like these very much, and I envy Amy Jean's particular worldview…but the decade was uglier.

      • Abe Sauer [#148]

Every decade is (was). Uglier. But it was in a way that the majority of other entries only solipsistically noted. If the others were "art" and this is not, then it just confirms my low view of "art" as it is defined by many of those who consider themselves artists.

      • TerseNursePornstein [#58]

No offense meant to Amy Jean, but this isn't any less solipsistic, I don't think, than any of the others. Also, the nod to "Art" wasn't intended as a slight against her contribution, but more as a defense of those others, which actually resemble the ugly decade I recall. That said, I think the assignment specified "what the 00s meant to you", or something like that, thus "navel gazing" was practically mandated. (And if this is how Amy Jean really saw theworlds then, or how she wants to remember it, well, God bless, I guess.)

Tiny moments, people. Like all the rest of us have all the time. Doesn't mean all the rest of the moments weren't crazy ugly. They may well have been. Also, note: varying significance.

      • Abe Sauer [#148]

well, "art" is subjective as hell… arguing about it is pontless. I personally would value this as art before I would the vast majority of the other entries (mine included) which brought, largely, no challenge, beauty or even, really, much perspective despite seeming to try so very hard to. In that, they (the majority) were not personal ENOUGH, striving, desperately, shamelessly, to fabricate a connection between personal experiences and something from the decade that was greater than themselves, artifices of meaning created to showcase writing abilities; whereas this was nothing but the most personal… it is largely meaningless to anyone else, and in that aim, more wonderful..

    • TerseNursePornstein [#58]

@lotsoftreble: Yes, I saw those. I have no issue with Amy Jean's vantage point, nor am I a stranger to the profundity of the mundane. I disagree, however, with Abe's opinion that this was the best of the 00s series, but instead regard it as a new installment in a charming series of posts by this particular contributor. Few, if any, of the frames said anything at all to me about the period in question, which was– I thought–the point of this exercise.

.. whereas this was nothing but the most personal… it is largely meaningless to anyone else, and in that aim, more wonderful.. is great–but is that what this was all about? Is that what the 00s were?

Before I scrolled down, I thought the first picture was an empty American Analog Set 7" sleeve, and I was gonna be all, "Dude. 90's."

Thank you, Amy. The majority of these 00s were depressing enough to turn me away from this, my most favorite thing on the Internet. Big exception among these was the ode to Buffy, which pretty much left me weeping (in a good, cathartic way) after an exhausting Christmas. I pulled out the Season 5 DVDs to watch it all again.

I agree with Abe above. The other 00s entries brought, "largely, no challenge, beauty or even, really, much perspective despite seeming to try so very hard to. In that, they (the majority) were not personal ENOUGH, striving, desperately, shamelessly, to fabricate a connection between personal experiences and something from the decade that was greater than themselves."

They left me cold. But then this brought me right back in. Thanks again, Amy. We're leaving the 00s on a wistful note.

I really hope she's balanced and rotated her tires more than once a decade, if only because of all the damage she's doing to The Planet with her suboptimal gas mileage. It's the only home we have!
