The Museum Of 9/11 Golf Balls, Terrorism Sweaters And World Trade Center Knives

Pinnacle Anniversary Tribute Golf Balls

In most suburban homes, you wouldn't be surprised to find an array of dusty objects—pencil sharpeners, empty milk bottles, skateboards, air fresheners and perhaps a Mr. Potato Head—tucked into corners of spare bedrooms. In Andrew Marietta's house, in Cooperstown, New York, this stuff shares a common theme: September 11, 2001.

Marietta is the owner of one of the world's largest private collections of September 11 memorabilia. Stored in boxes scattered around his home are 1500 to 2000 objects originally produced by companies to commemorate the event. Many of these items are strange in their ordinariness: Marietta's collection includes not just plaques [...]

Too Soon, Angry Birds Rio

From time to time, The Awl offers its space to everyday citizens with something to say.

Each 9/11 season, we see more and more the creeping influence of foreign nationals on this important American day of unity and remembrance. Last year they tried to turn Ground Zero into an international house of sharia worship. A few years back, a Polish-born architect named Daniel Libeskind was nearly allowed to turn Ground Zero into a series of hippie-hammocks and cuddle-puddle chambers. And now, this tenth anniversary—the most important to date, because we love round numbers and because we prefer a base ten system of numbering—is also, already, the most cruelly plundered for [...]

Obama To Ruin 9/11 With Focus On Community, Change

"The Obama White House is behind a cynical, coldly calculated political effort to erase the meaning of the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks from the American psyche and convert Sept. 11 into a day of leftist celebration and statist idolatry," reports the American Spectator. You should read the whole thing for the full, sickening details, but do be advised that the administration is attempting to transform the day "into a celebration of ethanol, carbon emission controls, and radical community organizing…. a day of activism, food banks, and community gardens."

Two-Wheeled Mountain Biking Extravagant, Self-Indulgent, Say German Extreme Mountain Unicyclists

Do you speak German? No? How sad for you. I do. And I have done you the favor of translating the narration of this incredible video of 26-year Lutz Eichholz his friend Stephanie Dietze unicycling in the Dolomite Mountains in northern Italy.

Eicholz: "Attention! I am Lutz Eichholz!"

Dietze: "Unt I am Stephanie Dietze!"

Eicholz: "We are German unicyclists, who have come to Italy to teach our neighbors to our south an important lesson about the value of austerity."

Our Boy In D.C.: 9/12

Saturday in D.C., as you may have heard, saw a reversal of sorts. A hotly-disputed number (we average those crowd estimates at 20,000) of middle-aged white conservatives of all stripes, armed with digital cameras, took to their lawn chairs on the National Mall to protest a grab bag of issues. Some of the issues drawing their ire-health care, card check-were relevant to the current conversation. Others, like D.C.'s now defunct gun ban and Barack Obama's place of birth, were nothing of the sort. So, in many ways, conservatives now find themselves in the same hopeless position as did liberals circa 2003, with a critical core of dissent energizing [...]

Today is Rick Scott's First Killing!

Technically, it's Florida's monstrous, terrible governor Rick Scott's second killing, if you count all the money he made when he was forced out of his own company, as it made the "largest fraud settlement in U.S. history," as it had systematically defrauded the government of millions of dollars. But it's his first killing of a human being! Is everyone terribly upset about the death, six hours from now, of Manuel Valle? Actually, probably yes: even the makers of pentobarbital have written to Rick Scott to ask him not to kill Manuel Valle with their drug. But the victim's family is really very eager for someone to die [...]

Dramatic, New 9/11 Video Released on 9/11 Eve!

In non-news, the National September 11 Memorial & Museum has released what can only be described as Shocking New Videos of Planes Hitting Buildings, because now they have a digital museum thingie. Also, kind of fuck you? Never forget? 9/10, a day that will live in infamy? At least they have an annual news peg for Dramatic New Videos, I guess.
