How Swedepop Happened

"Three-quarters of a century ago, Swedish authorities tried to put a stop to the pernicious encroachment of international pop music, and instead they accidentally built a hothouse where it flourished."

But remember, kids, Sweden is…SOCIALIST!!!…and socialism is Bad for Bidness.

I consider most of that stuff with "Scandinavian fingerprints all over it" unlistenable, but there's no denying it's highly profitable.

I lived in Stockholm for a couple of years during the 1990s. One general observation I made is that ordinary Swedes tend to be much more knowledgable about the rest of the world, including music, than ordinary Americans. For example, next to my apartment building was a restaurant and bar that featured dancing to American country music every Friday night. It was slightly surreal but not actually unusual for Sweden.
