Why Is Woman So Disliked?

What if God, knowing that in creating the world He had also unleashed so much suffering that it would prove too terrible for His creatures to contend with, decided to designate one person upon whom all the world's opprobrium would be heaped, one pitiful receptacle for all of the jealousy and hatred and envy and general distemper, one poor penitent who, by bearing the brunt of all the petty prejudice, allowed the rest of us to empty ourselves enough of such debilitating disgust that we would be able to otherwise carry on with our miserable lives? If you knew that this were the case, would you still be so mean about Anne Hathaway? Because apparently she's it.

Jesus of Hathaway?

ericdeamer (#945)

I'm going bearish on shares of Berkshire Hathaway because of all this.

Pop Socket (#187)

Have some respect for the dying. She's been diagnosed with a terminal case of Theater Kid. That's pronounced 'Thee-ah-tah'.

ericdeamer (#945)

@Pop Socket So from what I gather the brief against Hathaway is that she is, like, too theatrical or affected or performative in her manner or something? This is of course in contrast to all the other professional actors who are beloved for being completely genuine at all times.

Astigmatism (#1,950)

@ericdeamer Or that she's too eager to be liked, Tracy Flick syndrome-ish, or that "I knew someone from her high school who said she was really egotistical." These being complaints from people who've never met her. As a guy who finds her utterly gorgeous, it's hard not to ascribe ill motives to all the hate, personally.

deepomega (#1,720)

@ericdeamer Unlike, to pick an actor totally at random, Daniel Day Lewis. The most naturalistic of human beings.

I really don't get this. And never heard any of it until just before she got the nomination. There are actual honest-to-god boy bands out there and people are hating on Anne Hathaway? Makes no sense.

@My Number Is My Address Zayn Malik libel!

City_Dater (#2,500)

@My Number Is My Address

I know! I prefer to save my violent expressions of dislike for people who are actually up to no good, like my neighbors who leave their garbage in the hallway or Courtney Love.

@City_Dater Oh god, you're right! Everybody should have a thing on their driver's licenses indicating whether they are or are not Courtney Love.

whizz_dumb (#10,650)

@My Number Is My Address Shit, I would check that 'No' box so hard.

questingbeast (#201,738)

She seems nice.

hershmire (#233,671)

I had to look up more than half the names in that article and I'm OK with that.

Brian Calandra (#3,753)

If Awl pal Richard Lawson, who has been the most lucid, detailed and consistent Anne Hathaway hater on the Internet, would please explain why it's still OK to hate Anne Hathaway per your hypothetical, that would be very helpful.

While he's at it, if he could explain what being "too theatre" or "too much of a theater kid" is, vis a vis every other actor in human history, that would be very helpful, too.

Vulpes (#946)

@Brian Calandra I love Richard, but I really have this feeling he hates her so much because he sees his own theater kid self in her to a discomforting degree. I'm not sure he even realizes it. I also imagine he has/had a lot of friends an awful lot like her, and the things that annoy him about them, but that his friendship papers over, come out full force in a celebrity he doesn't actually know.

KenWheaton (#401)

The only thing that would make me dislike Hathaway is if she ACTUALLY gives a shit about what any of these people are saying on Twitter and elsewhere. Count yer blessings, kid. And yer money. And yer statues.

messica (#234,148)

I feel like discussions of the backlash against the backlash against Anne Hathaway really display a misunderstanding of how the "haters" feel about Anne Hathaway. There should be a large breathing room of space between the eye-rolling that some do when Anne Hathaway affects a humility that can't hide her theater kid over-eagerness and the vile, jealous vitriol that those people are accused of.
I feel like the split between people who do/don't appreciate her over eagerness is equal to the ratio of those who do/don't appreciate the method pretentiousness of a Day Lewis or a Christian Bale, it's just that there isn't a false ideal that men are unnecessarily envious and hateful to other men, nor a patriarchal belief that women should be protected from bad things because they are fragile, especially beautiful ones applying to men, so instead of just accepting that some people annoy each other we have to read thirty blog posts all over the internet about, "why are these catty bitches so jealous of poor Anne Hathaway?"

theheckle (#621)

@messica Wait, wait. Why are these catty bitches so jealous of Anne Hathaway?

Astigmatism (#1,950)

@messica Tell me about the backlash to the "method pretentiousness of a Day Lewis or a Christian Bale" and we can talk about whether the backlash to that backlash is equivalent to this one.

LondonLee (#922)

So we don't hate Gwyneth Paltrow anymore?

C_Webb (#855)

@LondonLee See, I loved Gwyneth Paltrow when she was Anne Hathaway, but I hate Anne Hathaway now that she's Gwyneth Paltrow.
