Republican Party Will Soon Be Four Rich Guys In A Room

"One high-profile Republican strategist, who refused to be named in order to avoid inflaming the very segments of the party he wants to silence, said there is a deliberate effort by party leaders to 'marginalize the cranks, haters and bigots — there’s a lot of underbrush that has to be cleaned out.'"

OK, so last time I did this I got it right (Obama won the election after the economy recovered enough that he couldn't be pummeled with it) so I'm gonna do it again. In 2016, Rubio will be running for president and the Republicans will be mid-way through transforming their party into the party of recent immigrants. Huge latin@ votes, huge swing towards social conservatism.

@deepomega Where will the angry tea-partiers go? No way they will stand idly by while their party turns brown.

deepomega (#1,720)

@#56 Some of them will turn away. Some of them will realize that legal immigrants will help them push back against stuff like gay marriage/adoption, and form a new coalition.

jfruh (#713)

@deepomega well, yes, but Latinos actually support gay marriage at higher rates than the population at large. (My guess is there's nothing particularly Latino-specific about this, but rather it's a byproduct of Latinos being disproportionately younger than the population at large, what with age being the single strongest determiner of how you feel about gay marriage.)

@jfruh Data! Thanks.

@deepomega "Some of them will realize that"

See, this is where you are wrong. You are assuming that idiots can realize things.

@Niko Bellic @deepomega – while latin@ voters may be more socially conversative there's a much greater sense of "public" and government's social obligation than white/american people (and that includes park-slopish liberals!). like in, uh, the majority of the rest of the world, there isn't the overwhelming idea that you should drown the government in the tub because why; rather the sense that you are OWED shit by your government is alive, well and not subject to the disgusting entitlement discourse by which it is tarbrushed here… i'm looking fwd to that one.

@deepomega Rubio will never fly with Latinos at large. He's a white right-wing Cuban. This is where the Republicans are making another grave misstep. They read Latinos as a homogenous group, rather than realizing there are grave class and race divisions in Latino politics as well.

@Lionel Mandrake shhh! don't give them any help!

Once you realize that neither party does anything other than try to serve their narrow best interests sold under the guise of the greater good, you will be very afraid.

Did the unnamed individual seriously use a reference to "clearing brush"? That's a riot, as Dubya and his passion for brush-clearing helped the whackjob side of the Republican party think they needed to express their views on every single thing.

Lotsa luck, geniuses. You had your chance with Rocky and now you reap what you have sown.

@My Number Is My Address Yeah, this has been in the inevitable destination since the train left Southern Strategy Station.

oldtaku (#9,009)

Careful, guy, you're on someone else's purge list. The long knives are thirsty.

BadUncle (#153)

How do you marginalize a group with the most successful news network? They continue to control the conversation.
