Gun Violence Reports Are The New Weather Reports

Remember how, after the mass murder in Aurora, a certain group of people were all, "Now, in the wake of the tragedy, is not the time to talk about these things, because you would be blatantly politicizing them to serve your own agenda"? Well I guess they've come up with a pretty perfect strategy for keeping the conversation quiet: So long as we have a solid shoot-em-up every couple weeks we can keep kicking any kind of debate down the road indefinitely. Be careful out there.

@Annie K. : Just as a completely nonpartisan data point, I'll note that Chicago has some of the most restrictive handgun laws in the US.

And by "most restrictive," I mean, : until 2010, when it was overturned by the Supreme Court, there was a total ban on all handguns within Chicago. Currently, Chicago residents may own a single functioning handgun, and it may not be transported outside the owner's home unless broken down and not trigger-ready. Training required for a Chicago handgun license is not permitted within the city itself, and no gun stores may operate within the city, etc. etc.

On the other hand, Chicago is not exactly an isolated area, and state laws are not as restrictive. So — tough city laws basically default to the standards of the surrounding state, in practice?

@Gef the Talking Mongoose So, Chicago shootings because of all those bastards from out of town? I didn't know any of that and it's REALLY interesting.

@Annie K. It's more that there are multiple reasons one could conceivably justify banning guns, and "stopping criminals from having guns" isn't one of them. They'll find a way to buy 'em illegally, which is what happens in Chicago – whether that means buying them out of town, or just paying more for them.

I wonder if the number of shootings is any higher than last year?

And yet news outlet The Awl is silent on the violence that happened at a so called "lit" event on New York's notorious Lower East Side that news outlet The Awl itself urged people to attend. Typical liberal media.

@Matt That story is fscked up. Spread the truth!

@Matt I experienced extreme disappointment and crowd sweat at the Ace Hotel while attending an Awl recommended event.

Take Your Gun to Work Day
Take Your Gun to the Movies Day
Take Your Gun to School Day
Take Your Gun to Church Day
Take Your Gun to Any Random Location in America Day. (oh sorry, that's every day.)

@hockeymom My guy really wants to see the The Expendables 2, but I don't know, it's rated R and she's a little sensitive.

deepomega (#1,720)

Wait. Two are dead, including the gunman. And that includes the coworker he shot. So… uh…. This is actually not a mass shooting but a "dude shoots one person, cops shoot 8 others"?

@deepomega : As of now, the Times reports 9 bystanders shot, so that means the cops fired 14 rounds at one guy and managed to hit 10 different people.
