The Last Two-Newspaper Town in America Means War

As of today, Philipstown, New York, is a two-newspaper town. Like all such things, it's already gotten ugly: "This week, news of Gordon Stewart’s [new] paper spread around town. On Monday afternoon, he received a phone call from Doug Cunningham, the editor of the Putnam County News and Recorder. 'He was so wound up,' Stewart said. Cunningham wanted to know if there was a liberal conspiracy behind the paper involving the local Democratic politicians, or the Hudson Valley Land Trust, or 'the Facebook guys,' referring to Chris Hughes and his partner Sean Eldridge, who own an estate in the area." Oh Lordy.

Oh cripes, not that tedious Hughes creature again…

The News and Recorder is a trip, though. Good stuff: Leading the Bike to School parade, the mayor of Cold Spring hit a speed bump and got a concussion. A couple columns over, he's at the zoning board shutdown of a proposed senior assisted living facility that wanted to offer market rate units… the analysis of the board dynamic was straight up awesome and did not even HAVE to suggest that the concussion contributed to his siding with the new lone wolf board member…

Cold Spring! Love ya.

From the New Yorker story last yaer, and then this NY Mag piece, that Doug Cunningham guy sounds like he's gunning for one of those aneurysms where your brain literally explodes.
