Mitt Romney: No Nixon

"If there's one thing you can say about Romney in his career as a politician is that there is nobody who he doesn't consider expendable, whether that is a staffer, a friend, an ally, or any particular group of constituents who presume to think that, just because they elected him, he owes them something. He is Nixon without the awesome, class-bred insecurities. Nixon knew when he was being vicious. He gloried in it. The White House tapes drip with his self-indulgent tough-guy crap through which you can see the quivering little grocer's son. That insecurity may be the only thing that saved the Republic. Willard Romney never has known that insecurity for a day in his life. He is casually vicious and he doesn't even recognize that he is."

Oh, wow, "casually vicious." That must totally be why Romney has always reminded me more of the villain from "The Dead Zone" more than any other politician of our time. It's something in his plastic smile. You can just so easily see him kicking a dog to death. And of course, thanks to Gail Collins, we know about him and dogs. (Not that I'm advocating anyone with clairvoyant precognition actually shoot him, of course.)

I hadn't put that together about Nixon and Thatcher, that they both had grocer fathers. (Explains maybe their need to be grosser than their fathers?)

Over and above policy choices, it was actually his lack of self-awareness/self-reflection that I found most disconcerting about W. So glad to have a reprise.

Are you OK with Obama eating dogs?

So Dubya was a high-functioning idiot, and Rmoney is a high-functioning psychopath. Such lovely people millions of our compatriots want to be president. They get the government they deserve, but unfortunately, the rest of us get that government too.
