Internet Still Talking About 'Girls'

"[Lena Dunham] grew up in New York, and you can see it in her clothes and body: no white girl allows herself to look like that if she didn’t admire the rounder shapes, and more complicated stylings, that women of color tend to pursue as their idea of beauty."
There's so much going on in here. [Via]

I finally hit Defcon5 with the Exiledonline thing today. I am ready for the backlash against the backlash to begin.

Matt Cornell (#8,797)

@caw_caw Seriously. The writer thought it necessary to comment on Dunham's "nude doughy depressing body." WTF?

hockeymom (#143)

Because apparently only WHITE WOMEN FROM NEW YORK are OK with their bodies because they are WHITE WOMEN FROM NEW YORK.
If Hilton Als says it's true, it must be so.

Also, a Basquiat name check. Of course.

hockeymom (#143)

@hockeymom Related: The state of Wisconsin exists. Hilton Als has not heard of Wisconsin. Or Iowa. Or Minnesota. Hilton Als needs to go to the Minnesota State Fair.

@hockeymom Even white boys gotta shout!

"Dunham’s critics may or may not go away, and the work will stand on its own, and she will go on to greater and lesser triumphs, and become an artist."

I love this for so many reasons.

@Ghost Fart@twitter This is actually what bothers me the most about Dunham. We're probably going to have to deal with her for the next 40 yaers.

@ReginalTSquirge Kill your TV. Or, really cable.

sharilyn (#4,599)

Was this piece actually written in an echo chamber? Or does it just sound that way?

Joey Camire (#6,325)

I was more interested in understanding how I "can help" my whiteness. It's been a problem for years.

Saaoirse (#232,557)

What do those words, like, mean, in that, like, sentence?

Lemonnier (#14,611)

I don't think Dunham looks the way she does because she admires the style of women of color. I think she just honestly doesn't give a shit how she looks, which is pretty cool.
