The NYC Restaurant Grade App

Here is the iPhone app that lets you see (iTunes link) the Department of Health sanitation ratings around you, or in your neighborhood, or by name. The City, in announcing their app, very carefully suggests some data in praise of the grades—salmonella is down! Eating out is up!—but doesn't go so far as to suggest causation. As you can't. But yay! Total information awareness nannystate! FEAR THE B GRADES, ALL THOSE EGGS ARE SLIGHTLY WARM.

1. Why do you have so many apps on your phone (47, at least)?

2. You should really update those apps.

My mom has this as one of the five bookmarks on her web browser's toolbar. She visits it daily to browse — not to consult, but browse!

This morning, I emailed her the Times story about punitive violations, such as a 7-point deduction for napkins shorter than the knives and forks. She shot back that exposed utensils could cause contamination. I believe she is writing a letter.

So, in other words, don't use this app. Call my mom…. Wait, no, I mean….

I still haven't gotten over learning that my favorite East Villiage Thai reastaurant was shut down over rats and cockroaches.
