The Only British Newspaper Reporter in Syria Killed

Just six days after Times reporter Anthony Shadid died in Syria, Sunday Times reporter Marie Colvin was killed, along with photographer Remi Ochlik, when a building used as a media center in Homs was shelled. Also killed: a prominent citizen journalist. Here is Colvin's recent report from Syria, given after the most recent three weeks of the non-stop government bombing. According to the BBC, Colvin was actually the only British newspaper journalist in Homs. Here is her speech on war reporting from 2010. Similar to the bombing of the media, doctors and nurses are being targeted by the government. Now reporters are calling for all journalists to leave Syria.

I think Arwa (the link at the end) is just saying that there are wounded journalists that need to be evacuated for care, not that all journalists should leave Syria.

You have to live a hell of a life to get an obit photo that badass.

Good god. It's crazy to think that journalists were actually (relatively) safer in some of the biggest, bloodiest conflicts of the 20th century — WWII and Vietnam spring to mind, but also civil wars everywhere — than they are now. This is important!

(Also it's heartening that we still have people like Colvin brave enough to do their jobs in this environment of constant harassment, murder, and budget cuts. RIP.)

Is there evidence that the Syrian government is targeting journalists? Shadid died of an asthma attack on the Turkish border not at the hands of the Assad regime.

@Lockheed Ventura They shelled a fucking media center, killing 20 people. Of course, they're targeting journalists.

Lockheed Ventura (#5,536)

What constitutes a "media center"? How do you know it was intentionally targeted? I think it is a tragedy that these people died, but I am also wary of the propaganda narrative that may be developing.

@Lockheed Ventura If the Assad regime was issuing visas to press, they wouldn't have to sneak over the fucking border.

People who snipe about the "lamestream" media to score points with voters can go straight to hell.

Goddammit. Not Colvin.
I could use a good "dog nurses rabbits" story right about now.

@IBentMyWookie And yes, I recognize the irony in wanting to find solace in a fluff piece that will take me away from the reality of journalists being killed in service of actual, hard news that is too-frequently ignored and under-reported.
