Davy Jones, 1945-2012

What's your favorite Monkees song? I think mine's "Valleri." Davy Jones died of a heart attack this morning in Florida. He was 66.

I'll never be able to watch Star Trek IV the same way again.

Last train to Clarksville. All aboard, now. Last train. Tickets, please. Last train to Clarksville. Don't know if it's ever coming home.

@melis Oh no no no!

We'll always have the Davy Jones episode of Pop-up Brady.

Without him David Bowie wouldn't have had to change his name which is probably a good thing – 'David Jones' doesn't sound like the name of a Glam Rock space alien does it?

Pleasant Valley Sunday? At least it would be in a world where 'Daydream Believer' didn't exist.

Not to denigrate the dead, but "Steppin' Stone" is my vote.

Dave Bry (#422)

I was just having a conversation with someone about that. How I often think I'd choose "Steppin' Stone." (I mean, whichever Monkees song the Sex Pistols cover is probably really going to be the best one, right?) But I do love "Valleri" a lot. And since today is today, today it's "Valleri."

@Dave Bry Minor Threat did it too, but yes, on a day like today, it's all Davy. Remember when the boys all played spin the bottle and Davy had to leave the room so Peter could get a kiss, and the bottle flew up in the air and stuck to the door out of which Davy had exited?

@Dave Bry Yes, yes, steppin stone is the coolest darkest edgiest Monkey song, but the Believer tunes (Ima and Daydream)are so sweet and creamy! I'm sure Sid would have gotten around to them if he hadn't choked to death on that ham sandwich.

A Good Question (#182,018)

I'd go with "Valleri" too. The Monkees found the level that's just psychedelic enough.

I have a place in my heart for this one. I bet if you played it for a YPoT (Young Person of Today) and said it was Mumford & Sons or Fleet Foxes or someone like that, they'd believe you.

freetzy (#7,018)

@growler Is this Valleri in the video, THE Valleri? Homina homina.

Moxie (#81,363)

His locker. Duh.

"Mary, Mary" and "Sweet Young Thing". And I am an old who was 11 when the show premiered, so I must be right.

What, no votes for "A Little Bit Me, A Little Bit You"? Any song with hand claps and an electronic organ in it is a winner in my books.
