Brown graduate ('03) A. G. Sulzberger, a "veteran vegetarian," by his account, is having a hard time finding things to eat since his posting as the New York Times' Kansas City correspondent in the fall of 2010. Sounds like someone's due for a sympathy promotion!

You know, as a picky eater, I worry about being an asshole about food. But at least I'm not a
vegetarianSulzberger.@Tyler Coates Mmmmm ... sulzburger.
@C_Webb #sulzburgerchat
Man should learn to cook.
Admittedly I grew up in a different part of the Midwest but it sounds like Sulzberger never goes to a grocery store and if he does he's unable to find the produce section. I am sorry that he didn't seem to know that any refried beans worth their salt are made with lard. Not to mention there are 2 Whole Foods in Kansas City.
As vegs who lived in KC for six years, the wife and I had a good laugh over that article.
Also I know for a fact that dude is eating more than iceberg lettuce at the Westside Local. Promotion, indeed.
@ContainsHotLiquid Thank you! He also failed to specify that Fud is not only vegetarian but completely vegan. There are lots of restaurants that offer vegan dishes if you just ask as well, the crepe place by Westside has vegan crepes, Succotash has vegan pancakes.. If you're not limited by dairy honestly there are a shit ton of places you can eat.
one wonders how he survived the ratty.
@laloca03: One wonders how long it takes an ivy-league grad to self-identify.
@SidAndFinancy : One believes the pluralis majestatis is the tip-off.
@laloca03 : Really? Because that place is like Lentil Kingdom.
@Gef the Talking Mongoose : yikes. 20 years ago it was just cheese. and eggplant.
@SidAndFinancy : five minutes, give or take, judging by the speed of your reply.
"Brown graduate" +10
I feel his pain. When I lived in New York, I could not find any .30-30 shells in Chelsea for deer hunting season. And hunter safety blaze orange hats or vests? Fuggedaboutit!
@Abe Sauer We have them in Brooklyn for when we do taxidermy! You should have come by!
Every time I see that picture, I get the feeling that he's going to ask me to input my sales numbers both into my personal account and into the new website.
"Veteran vegetarian" = huge pain in the arse.
But they've got some crazy little women there. Did he get him one?
If he thinks he doesn't like Kansas City food now, wait until 1983 when it gets nuked by the Soviets.
Someone snuck a look at my new screenplay, The Only Vegetarian in Kansas.
@deepomega : So, we're looking at a contender for #53?
I read this article thirty minutes ago and rage levels don't seem to be diminishing in the slightest, look out internet
Vegetarian is the last thing you want to be in KC, the world capital of barbecue. Just go carnivore for ONE MEAL and try Oklahoma Joe's ribs. If you still want to be vegetarian after that, be my guest.
You guys are all just jealous of him.
Sincerely,
Mitt Romney
"And, finally, it is important to not forget that hunger is the price a picky eater must be willing to pay without becoming insufferable." Funny story about that one, AG...
I feel the author could have avoided some confusion/derision by mentioning that he doesn't really cook for himself, and that he's only talking about dining out, and part of his trouble is finding places to eat when he's on the road. It really didn't help his case that he started so early talking about how he was frequenting the big-time meat venders in KC--knowingly! Well, yeah, you aren't going to find good vegetarian meals at the BBQ places and steakhouses and such. Surprise? HOWEVER. "In truth, it is less satisfying to be a vegetarian here. Those on the coasts have it better." That is fair enough, I think. Still, I've lived in Missouri all my life, and went vegetarian in 2000. It can be annoying to be a vegetarian, and how good/bad it is depends partly on where you are, but I've never experienced the hunger pains he seems to be complaining of! KC doesn't have as many options as, say, St. Louis, but I've been there a few months now and really am doing okay! The vegetarian-friendly restaurants are harder to find, but they exist, and honestly if you can't cook for yourself you can always go to Trader Joe's for some reasonably good frozen and microwavable options. You will not STARVE, is what I'm saying. No need to be overly dramatic.
