Dan Tepfer, 'Goldberg Variations / Variations'

As something of a Goldberg Variations obsessive, I have been surprisingly pleased by Dan Tepfer's Goldberg Variations / Variations. Jazz interpretations of Bach can be pretty hit or miss, but both the improvisation and the source material are exceptionally well-handled on this album. Read more about it here.

I feel like pianist John Lewis set the bar with his late 1980s masterpieces of each of the Bach Preludes and Fugues. At least for me, it's the yardstick with which all other jazz Bach fusion records are measured.

What are your thoughts on Richard Powers' "Gold Bug Variations"?

@shostakobitch It's not as good as Gain, but that's a pretty high bar.
