Except in this telling of the story, rather than fight the Greeks physically, the Maccabees swindle the Greeks into financial ruin through the fine print in real-estate contracts. And then they trick god into making one day's worth of oil last a miraculous eight days by promising NOT to kill his only son. But as the camera pulls back, we see that Judah has his fingers crossed behind his back.

The fact that Mel Gibson can apparently only reconcile himself to Jewish culture through epic violence should tell everyone everything they need to know. When I heard about this, my reaction wasn't "WHAAAT?!?!?!?," but more like "makes sense…."
