Patti Smith, "Rolling In The Deep"

You know how you know you've written a good song? I mean, besides the fact that it spends seven weeks at the number one spot on the pop charts, and the 2.6 million albums you've sold because of it? And besides Billboard declaring it, "the biggest crossover song of the past 25 years?" When Patti Smith covers it in concert. And when she says she wishes she could remember the words better, but that, "I love this fuckin' song, even though I can't/And I'm here to testify: Adele, she's great!" Adele must be psyched.

the village voice figured out that it was the biggest crossover song of recent pop history first

Not liking this song makes me a monster, right?

Danzig! (#5,318)

@boyofdestiny If you don't like the backing vox there is something wrong with you, yes.

(checks BOD's pulse) Nope, nothin'.

@boyofdestiny Seriously?! We're in a fight.

A taste monster.

boyofdestiny (#1,243)

Ok, ok, ok, let me rephrase. It's a perfectly fine song. What I meant was, "Not understanding what the big deal is makes me a monster, right?"

Rosebud (#4,107)

@boyofdestiny Still kinda of monster-y…

What? You're going around thinking, "Hey, she's got a nice voice but that's not a song, it's just a hook crying out to be sampled," something like that? Yeah, that's pretty much the mark of Cain you've got on you.

I clicked on this and thought I'd hear a singer named "Adele" and a song named "Rolling in the Deep" but instead I heard "Crazy" by "Gnarls Barkley." Weird.

How does Summerstage determine who gets chairs and who doesn't? There were no chairs for Emmy Lou Harris/Levon Helm and I had scary halfnaked drunk mullet man in my goddamn face all night.

keisertroll (#1,117)

Adele crossed over for somebody's sins but not mine.

@keisertroll
I wish I had the teeshirt version of your comment.

keisertroll (#1,117)

@Tulletilsynet You make 'em and I'll license the saying to you.

Tulletilsynet (#333)

Did you ever notice how you hear some song for the first time and you think, And yet this is not the first time; I have always known that song; may the rocks fall on me before I hear it again. And then you're in some awful store where you have to go for some reason, and they play it, or it's on the jukebox, or you have to stand next to somebody on the subway and it's playing on that person's personal deafness device so loud it makes the temples of your glasses vibrate. But somehow you go through all this and manage not to learn the name of the song or the artist, and then up come Patti Smith and Dave Bry sneaking up on you and they bite you in the ass.

aaand Weezy used it on Sorry 4 The Wait! ("You ain't gotta wonder bout me, Wonder Woman")

LondonLee (#922)

Adele might not give a shit about Patti Smith. Just sayin'

MikeBarthel (#1,884)

I love Patti but god bless, maybe a song that so heavily involves "singing" is not something she should attempt.
