Lana Del Ray, "Video Games"
Here is a video that I can't stop watching. It was brought to my attention by Awl pal Mary H.K. Choi and her crew at MTV Style, and it is pretty much exactly what you would expect to be coming out of Los Angeles at the moment. After Amy Winehouse and "Mad Men" and Best Coast, a person named Lana Del Ray describing herself as a "gangster Nancy Sinatra," singing about drinking beer and playing video games though big bee-stung lips seems like a natural progression. But the song is great, and the video—mixing "World of Warcraft" screen clips and paparazzi footage with vintage backyard home movies and skateboarding flicks and stop-motion photography of roses opening—is so perfect as to make you think that Belinda Carlisle really was right. Heaven.
I am not convinced this person has ever played a video game. Where's the excitement?
And I'm pretty sure Dave Bry has never played World of Warcraft…
Was the falling down drunk celeb Paz de la Huerta? Or have i just been reading bout her too much on the hairpin recently?

@olmucky: This is true! I was using the phrase as an descriptive. (I probably should have not put it in quotes. Or said "style" or something.)
@Dave Bry No worries, I'm just being a chump! I spent a little while trying to figure out what game that is — I'm not sure, part of it looks kind of like Killzone 2. Regardless, thanks for the post.
Is it just me or is there something very very Judy Garland about her? Both in something in her face, but also her voice?

Great video but I can't form an opinion of the record because I worry that I like it more than I would if she was ugly. Can she do another video where she has a bag over her head?
this is fine, i guess. i mean, it's pretty, she's got a nice, sultry voice, and the lyrics are ok but, at what point, did it become ok for pop music to go absolutely nowhere and take 5 minutes to do it? this is about as dynamic as a straight line.
@iantenna I kind of see what you mean but there's something sort of relentless about the lack of dynamism that rings truer than conforming to the dictates of the form would. Probably.

I have stopped watching them. It is possible to do that expeditiously.
