Prince Turns 53 Today

"Happy 53rd Birthday, Prince Rogers Nelson. You are definitely one of the world’s 'Favorite Blacks.' We know this not because of all the joy your music has brought your millions of fans. But because in 1985 you and your band, the Revolution, were presented the honor 'Favorite Black Album' at the American Music Awards (by Huey Lewis and Madonna, no less). The irony of this is that you didn’t even win that award for your raw-as-hell The Black Album (which didn’t come out till a few years later and scared all your pop fans who never heard Dirty Mind; we had to buy that shit on a bootleg cassette behind the counter at an 8th Street head shop like it was contraband). You won it for Purple Rain."
Ego Trip celebrates Prince's birthday well.

I can't believe I'm actually saying this but… he's only 53?? Okay. That makes me feel better about things.

@jolie

He had hip replacement surgery last year. Not sure if that makes things better or worse.

@City_Dater SO MUCH WORSE WHAT IS WRONG WITH YOU WHY WOULD YOU SAY THAT?? So depressed now.

@jolie

Sorry, love! But remember, he's USED those hips! (It's like a professional runner needing a knee replacement a decade sooner than a normal person might.)

"It's like, 'how much more black could this be?' and the answer is 'None. None more black.'"

I love that the first cutaway is of Smokey Robinson. Look! Another Black Artist!

I wonder if Morris Day and the Time came in second that year.

Morris, and his baggies, are always first place.

KarenUhOh (#19)

He was The Blackest after that Other Guy.

Also. Qaddafy's birthday. And mine. I am younger than both. Yay me, for once.

@carpetblogger Happy belated birthday, Carpetblogger!

Ohhh – Madonna looks so trashylovely. But who is the huge blond man who walks in behind Prince? Is he part of the Revolution? Is he security for Prince's baubles?

Pandemic Endemic (#3,825)

@TrilbyLane The guy who could pass for a wrestler?

Wish I knew. Also wish I knew why Madonna was talking during Sheila's acceptance speech (so not cool!).

I watched this as a teen, and as I re-watch it in 2011 I can't stop giggling at Prince in his moody silence and purple monkey-fur outfit with flowers. He seems so aggrieved by this award for Best Black Album On Vinyl. I sort of see his point, dreadful categorization. Love him, but his sulky ponciness makes me laugh here.

This was also the night they recorded the celebrity wallow in Ethiopian misery, "We Are The World". I'm rather glad for Madonna that she wasn't invited/skipped it. What a phony ratfuck.
