Here are some thoughts on Bill Forsyth's Local Hero, which just happens to be my favorite film of all time. If you've never seen it, I would encourage you to send this link to yourself and save it for when you've finally watched the movie, which you should ABSOLUTELY DO AS SOON AS IT IS POSSIBLE FOR YOU. If you have seen it, you're cleared to click: the post does a really good job of explaining why the movie is so magical.

"my favorite film of all time"
SECONDED.
Thirded. Still love it even on the elevetieth viewing.
HAPPER IS A SHIT
HAPPER IS A MOTHERF
"Shoot to kill."
Yes, thanks.
Love the description of Peter Capaldi as "a walking Orange Juice song"
Love the film too but I did prefer Gregory's Girl.
Can I get a hell yes for Breaking In. (Also lovable: Comfort and Joy.)
Love Comfort and Joy! It's at 92YTribeca on Mar 26 (www.92YTribeca.org) and I can't wait to see it again.
If they're selling Frosty Hots at the concession stand I will be there.
Yay, something good. Love that movie so much.
Love that movie.
Peter Riegert reminds me of Dustin Hoffman.
Other "smallish" great movies:
My Favorite Year
After Hours
The Secret of Roan Inish
The Year of Living Dangerously (pre-sugar tits)
"I'm not an actor I'M A MOVIE STAR!!!"
How about The Loneliness of the Long Distance Runner? Great in both film and original short story form.
I love this movie. it's magical. and then when he gets back to his apartment and it just feels so dead, it's like heartache.
funny, I hadn't read through to where you had written "magical" but just thought, Local Hero, yes! and magical is the word that came to mind. *sigh*
Such a good movie.
Thanks so much for linking to that! I'm giddy.
YAY!
Great soundtrack by Mark Knopfler, too.
YES IT IS.
Also, the band at the party is called THE ACETONES.
What a coincidence, I just got this in my mailbox from Netflix so now I'm really excited!
Mine too. I was just thinking about it this morning… Seriously.
@Hockeymom
My Favorite Year, also a wonderful movie.
Maybe not thinking of it in a good way. I mean the ending, you know?
"Great sky McIntyre, well done."
I love this movie so much that I registered just to leave a comment here.
The wisdom of the village fishermen knows no bounds.
"Do you eat the lobster you catch?"
"Oh, nae, toooo expensive."
They also seem to be an open-minded, opportunistic lot.
"Cute baby. Whose is it?"
What an awesome, awesome movie.
The link on the post is busted, but here's one that works: http://gregjhunter.wordpress.com/2011/03/11/local-hero-and-the-end-of-travel/
