James Garner Is Still Alive

Of all the actors whose charm rests mainly on the sense that they don't really give a shit and are pretty much just having a good time, James Garner may be my favorite. I don't know that I'd rush right out to read a memoir he wrote, but I will certainly look around for something on the Netflix the next time I'm aimlessly flipping channels.

They made a film adaptation of Roughing It? Has anyone seen it? Is it good?

I thought if was good. Of course, I'm hopelessly in love with James Garner…..

"Rockford Files". And then for getting blacklisted for a decade over "Rockford Files" syndie profits.

Actually, it was his suing Warner Bros. over breech of contract at the end of the 3rd season of Maverick that got him semi-blacklisted for a while because he had the gall to win.

HE sued Universal over the profits of Rockford – we're talking millions of dollars owed him – and won again although it took 10 years. You'd think the studios would quit trying to cheat HIM. He does NOT give up when he knows he's right.

My favorite Garner film: The Americanization of Emily, where he co-starred with Julie Andrews as a sailor preaching the values of cowardice during World War II. Bizarre, but incredibly good — and written by Paddy Chayefsky, of course, which probably should have gone first in this whole comment.

I was watching The Rockford Files just last night. It's on RTV here every night at 10pm right after Kojak.

The statue of James Garner in Norman, OK, is really sweet.

A-fucking-MEN. Garner is the motherfucking man.

I went to a David Mitchell book signing last summer and out of the blue I asked David Mitchell if he was a fan of the Rockford Files (weird yes, but he said he was raised on Seventies TV) his eyes lit up and he said that he was a huge fan of the Rockford Files.

And all was right in the world for at least 30 seconds.

Oh and for those who don't know, 3 whole seasons of the Rockford Files are available on Hulu. I recommend you watch James Garner get punched and solved crimes!

Just finished Season 2 of the Rockford Files. It's a toss up between the Isaac Hayes episode and the John Saxon episode for "Greatest 50 Minutes Ever" award.

The Files are televisual literature.
