Twitter Spat! Gawker Editors Trade Jabs Over Traffic

Gabriel Snyder, now head of Atlantic Wire, who was fired to make room for current Gawker editor Remy Stern, incited the wrath of his successor last night—by wondering about the traffic results of Gawker's takedown of Congressman Chris Lee. To the digital record!

Gawker's latest scalp didn't come with eyeballs: Sitemeter shows slight traffic bump http://www.sitemeter.com/?a=stats&s=sm5gawkerless than a minute ago via Twitter for iPhone

@gabrielsnyder Sitemeter hasn't been working since the redesign took effect. Nice try.Thu Feb 10 04:24:39 via web

@remystern Hmm. Recent trend on SItemeter http://t.co/Lkr0m8j seems to track with Quantcast http://t.co/vJucULjless than a minute ago via Twitter for Mac

@remystern That is an impressive graph. Kudos! If Google Analytics is your stat of choice, can we see the week since the redesign launched?less than a minute ago via Twitter for Mac

@remystern @gabrielsnyder if it wasn't working, wouldn't it register zero rather than a over a million pageviews per day?Thu Feb 10 04:26:45 via TweetDeck

@AntDeRosa Apparently the ajax is making it difficult for the counters to track traffic properly.Thu Feb 10 04:41:32 via web

@remystern how about your google juice? shouldn't you guys be getting a better ranking there for this story?Thu Feb 10 04:45:45 via TweetDeck

@AntDeRosa The link to us at the top of Drudge which has been up for hours would normally show a much bigger impactThu Feb 10 04:43:47 via web

@remystern @gabrielsnyder id bet on long term future of a site based on quality of content not quantity of visitors and in that regard…Thu Feb 10 05:20:08 via web

@hunterw Content has never been better. Can't say the same for The Daily. A total embarrassment.Thu Feb 10 05:34:06 via web

@gabrielsnyder If the ajax is affecting the ability to track stats, that impacts all site measurement tools. Duh.Thu Feb 10 05:44:14 via web

@remystern @hunterw @gabrielsnyder YOU GUYS. Stop it. Don't make me come over there.Thu Feb 10 05:53:42 via web

Which ex-Gawker ed takes on the winner? Choire are you up next?

keisertroll (#1,117)

I'm willing to buy as many candy bars from Choire as it takes to get him to Nationals.

Don't hate the player, hate the game, etc. etc.

La Cieca (#1,110)

Thanks, but just this once, I think I'll hate the players.

Multiphasic (#411)

From what I understand, rulers don't work properly when it comes to measuring certain kinds of wang.

boyofdestiny (#1,243)

"Sitemeter hasn't been working since the redesign took effect. Nice try."

This doesn't seem like a tremendously persuasive defense.

caw_caw (#5,641)

Can you show me on the page view graph where the bad man touched you?

Next up: What the age of Peak Scandal means for everybody's traffic.

saythatscool (#101)

Ooooh, c'mon you two. You both spectacularly suck.

scroll_lock (#4,122)

Elvis would've made them settle this with a stripped-down-to- white-cotton-panties wrestle match.

scroll_lock (#4,122)

Gabe getting Snyde makes Remy get Stern.

davetar (#1,114)

With those pun skills you could write for The Daily.

saythatscool (#101)

Sicha ass down with them silly puns.

scroll_lock (#4,122)

I never Balk at offering m'puns.

mathnet (#27)

Sicha 'n' ye shall find out how to pronounce his last name.

boyofdestiny (#1,243)

We all know how to pronounce it. You're preaching to the Choire.

scroll_lock (#4,122)

Watch Cho self, boy.

saythatscool (#101)

@mathnet: You in your ivory spiers.

boyofdestiny (#1,243)

You've got such a droll, Bry wit, scroll.

scroll_lock (#4,122)

Boy, it's time you knew: the truth shall set you Bry.

keisertroll (#1,117)

Choireverines!!!

katiechasm (#163)

Remy was Snide but Gabriel was Snyder

Moff (#28)

A lot of possibilities here. You guys haven't even put a Denton them.

KarenUhOh (#19)

Pissing contests are far more exciting when the contestants aren't standing in front of a wall.

A.R. Chrisman (#2,964)

Especially a redwall

keisertroll (#1,117)

Is this part of the Twenty To Follow segment?

katiechasm (#163)

To be fair, "Content has never been better" is a great joke.

punker (#8,046)

Clearly, both guys are douches.

s. (#775)

As much fun as it is to blame the redesign, wouldn't Lee's decision to resign immediately take the wind out of follow-up and second- (and third- and fourth- etc.) day stories also depress traffic?

Andrew McDaniel (#9,310)

So does this mean that even the Gawker editors are on board the "redesign is ugly and broken mess" meme train now?

jfruh (#713)

Wait, so they seriously did a redesign that broke their ability to measure their own traffic? So much for the pageview bonuses, I guess…

All part of the Dentonian plan.

BadUncle (#153)

But we speak Denton's wisdom, secret and hidden, which Denton decreed before the ages for our glory. (1 Mediacretins 2:7)

Kevin (#2,559)

The truth finally comes out.

BadUncle (#153)

That was a serious bag of inconsequential meow.

zidaane (#373)

Until Remy had to go out and stuff a cut-up hooker into a Hefty Steel Sak to feel better about himself.

LondonLee (#922)

Why are we supposed to care about Gawker's page views?

jolie (#16)

Oh wow, I don't think I realized that Remy was such a twat! Love all of this so so so so much!!!

C_Webb (#855)

I love it when you talk dirty, SG.

jolie (#16)

alsfkhlasfkhlaskfh 'SG'!!! <3 you so hard C_Webb!!

hman (#53)

This is what people do at 4AM nowadays?

Matt (#26)

I'm not coming to any conclusions until I hear what Joshua David Stein has to say.

jolie (#16)

He thinks he's tutu cool to care about any of this.

Matt (#26)

He stopped reading Gawker when his APC jeans were still raw denim.

NinetyNine (#98)

Waiting for Oxfeld School if Industry to weigh in. Oh, wait, they never talk about that part.

jolie (#16)

I have greenthumbed every comment in this post that I did not make. Today is seriously so awesome. I love you guys.

ericdeamer (#945)

I don't really know any of you guys but I greenthumbed almost every comment too and wanted to say how much I loved this!

Clip Arthur (#2,024)

“Apparently the ajax is making it difficult for the counters to track traffic properly.”

What dipshits did Gawker hire to redo the site? Not only is it a disaster to use—holy crap, I still don’t believe some of the basic errors—but any competent web developer knows that Ajax delivery of content totally screws up ANY tracking systems.

Great move Gawker! You are doing yourself in with your own vanity for what you think tech can do versus what it can actually do.

HiredGoons (#603)

Even a face lift can't hide the fact that you are getting old, and slightly irrelevant.

Art Yucko (#1,321)

Too Old; Can't Read Twitterese. -Goes Home-

iplaudius (#1,066)

I can’t help but think Gabriel Snyder was really poking fun at the fact that major tracking services like Site Meter cannot accurately measure Gawker’s traffic since the redesign.

Is "sitemeter" and "google analytics" euphemisms for someone's mother? Otherwise, I haven't witnessed worse trash talking since George went to the "jerk store".

semiserious (#2,430)

Remy's "wah, wah, my traffic is better than yours" is nauseating considering his traffic includes hits on older stories written under Snyder and every single previous Gawker editor.

No one ever seems to talk about that when talking about traffic growth on their site. Of course you're going to get more traffic when you have a huge inventory of old content on your site.

fek (#93)

God. Damn.

Unistrut (#9,851)

If you add an &r=12 to the sitemeter link you see can traffic over the last month.

http://www.sitemeter.com/?a=stats&s=sm5gawker&r=12

You can see the redesign cause half a million pageviews to disappear. The scoop brings the numbers up, but only enough to just barely peak over the lowest recorded pre-redesign numbers (ignoring weekends of course).

SaltyCaramel (#9,858)

So happy to have found the new clubhouse.
