Taj, 1940-2011

Taj, America's oldest elephant, died yesterday at her home at Six Flags Discovery Kingdom in Vallejo, California. An Asian elephant born March 3, 1940, Taj weighed 9,000 pounds and was a circus performer before coming to Six Flags in 1978. She enjoyed painting and was known for her joie de vivre. Said an attendee of her 70th birthday party last year, "That's awesome. I wish I could eat cake like that."

A-FUCKING-HEM, DAVID BRY:

Taj came to Marine World Africa USA in 1978.

This concludes Wednesday's edition of "Really? That Matters?"

YES. it matters to folks who spent their entire childhood trying to get that goddamn monkees thieving jingle out of their head.

You are right. Discovery had it wrong. Man. They really blew the reporting on this story. (I noticed that it was not written by Jennifer Viegas, who I love.) First of all, they said Taj was 71 (she was only 70), and then then also this.

Thanks, Multiphasic, for your close attention to these (yes! important!) matters.

Ian: My brain's been encoded with the "Marine-WORLD, Afri-CA…. U-S-A!!" version, which doesn't live on the internet as far as I can tell.

Dave Bry: To a certain generation, Six Flag's munching of MWAU was a horror of "Saturn Devouring His Son" proportions. Where once were orcas are now these massive, hideous roller coaster tracks. Almost makes you not want to wander aimlessly around Vallejo.

At some point we should stop enslaving these magnificent social animals in relative isolation from their own kind.

Yeah, shoulda kept 'em in Trenton, RIGHT GUYS?
