Ross Douthat Needs To Watch More Fox News Channel

"Violence in American politics tends to bubble up from a world that’s far stranger than any Glenn Beck monologue—a murky landscape where worldviews get cobbled together from a host of baroque conspiracy theories, and where the line between ideological extremism and mental illness gets blurry fast."
Has Ross Douthat not seen any Glenn Beck monologues?

There is no faction in American politics that actually wants its opponents dead.

That one caught my eye too.

Maybe he has seen a few Glenn Beck monologues, and regards his conspiracy theories as more Rococo than Baroque.

gumplr (#66)

If it ain't Baroque, don't fix it.

I always thought he was more of an Impressionist. Best viewed from a distance and a haphazard mess when you look closely.

deepomega (#1,720)

Mannerist, obviously. Which is to say exaggerated and caricatured beyond belief.

hockeymom (#143)

Oh, but didn't you hear? BOTH sides are equally guilty and anyway, this guy was just crazy. Nobody could have seen it coming.

boyofdestiny (#1,243)

So you're saying if we just treat each other more civilly, all of our problems will be solved? What a relief!

Also on FOX News Channel yesterday…lots of "Will of God" and "Proof of God's existence" and "A miracle from God" talk. Most from the anchor, Jon Scott, in reference to Gifford's survival. A news anchor.
No follow up on whether or not it was also proof of God's existence that a 9 year old girl was murdered, in addition to five others. Was that the "Will of God" as well?

To review our storylines for today:

1. Lone crazy guy, nobody could have known.
2. God saved the congresswoman (not the doctors or her gay, Hispanic intern).
3. If more people were carrying weapons, this could have been prevented.
4. The vitriol from both sides is exactly the same.
5. It's Barack Obama's fault for pushing an unpopular health care plan and not changing the tone in Washington.
6. Sarah Palin is a great cartographer.

Also, terrorism is defined by the race and religion of the shooter, not by how crazy the perpetrators are. Ergo, Fort Hood was terrorism, this was a crazy man.

I had a similar thought reading one of the new essays that Instapundit dude: perhaps he does not realize the term "blood libel" isn't really something you just want to throw around like a plush toy!

C_Webb (#855)

Trivia question: did anyone notice if Boehner found this worth crying about?

Ledrew (#654)

Kudos to whoever made the screen grab. "Rage from the Fox Newsroom," indeed.

I really wish that guy would shave. Like, right now.

if this is "a potential gift to liberalism" i'd like to know where i can return it.
