Gerry Rafferty, 1947-2011

Oh, man, Gerry Rafferty died. If you grew up in the late Seventies, "Baker Street" was an omnipresent force in your world. It took me a long time to get to the point where I could listen to the song without the layers of half-remembered brown and green living rooms affecting my perception, but once I finally did it was pretty obvious why it became the huge hit that it was. "Stuck In The Middle With You," which a whole new generation learned from the Reservoir Dogs soundtrack, is fun enough, and even though there's something very dated about it, "Right Down The Line" is another great one. For me, though, it's the Mark Knopfler-penned "The Way It Always Starts," from the soundtrack to Local Hero that will always have a special place in my heart. Rafferty was 63.

oh boy, RIP. gerry was a tremendous talent and a seriously fucked up soul. not to get all stereotypical record nerd, but i really, really love his early stuff as the humblebums w/ billy connolly, and his first solo album from '71. that early stealer's wheel shit is great too, unfairly overshadowed by the ubiquity of "stuck in the middle with you."

Is it my ears or is the version in that video way too fast? It's almost jaunty.

I believe it's some kind of edit, yeah.

I loved that song as a kid, especially the guitar break.

My mom, well meaning as ever, knew I loved it and so for Christmas, because she couldn't find the LP with that song on it, got me some other random Gerry Rafferty record, which I guess seemed close enough to her.

Similarly, when I was in 7th grade, because I was big Cardinals fan who had just moved to Chicago she made me a "St. Louis Cardinals" windbreaker for Christmas by ironing on white velour letters to a red nylon jacket to spell "St. Louis Cardinals" in an arc on the back. And several months later asked me why she never saw me wearing my Cardinals jacket.

"The layers of half-remembered brown and green living rooms affecting my perception…" Well put.
