Internet Destroying Itself Over Julian Assange

The Internet is in full froth over the Julian Assange arrest. You pretty much don't want to hear it from either side! For instance, a man weighs in! To him, the charges against Julian Assange "have always seemed, if not false, lame." False or lame, either way! But then do you want to hear about how women should be judged by the company they keep—from the left? Or watch Naomi Wolf trying on sarcasm? Probably none of that either! Also Tumblr is back online, so there's a lot of serious lady-fighting. :( It's a nightmare out there, maybe read a book until this all blows over.

If they take him to Sweden he will allegedly be more vulnerable to extradition by the U.S., so just blech times one million. But I saw it might take a year just to settle this matter of the Swedish extradition. A lot can happen in that time. Also, what is in the so-called 'doomsday file'?? p.s. Senator Feinstein is a big jerk.

Hey, whatever it takes to keep people from talking about that Girl Talk album.

I'm going out to take a leak.

Sometimes a guy just wants to get his wiki wet. Ya dig?

If you're going to link to that smear by the doctor who claims experience "helping [...] the survivors of sexual violence," then at least you could link to Kate Harding's takedown in the War Room.

What’s the hubbub all about? Was Bin Laden captured? Oh wait…

Seriously, it all sounds like he-said/she-said that might put someone on the “do not date” list, but nothing that warrants Interpol intervention in any way.

I actually feel sorry for his paramours/alleged victims. They seem to be pawns in the middle of this B.S. The question of them being raped initially is the debate, but they are definitely victims of this whole media clusterfuck.

There is definitely an awful lot of hyperbole and hyperventilating going on out there, but the books will have to wait while the actual cables go up. They are fascinating to read and a real education.

"Sex by Surprise" is a fascinating concept that I'm going to spend some time thinking about.

They really shouldn't be giving criminal acts such fun names. It's like if they renamed theft "Money by Surprise".

Isn't it possible he's both a hero and a scumbag? I mean, he does seem pretty arrogant about some things.

Also – I am kind of full of hate for JA right now. I don't like this whole "if you mess w/ me we have super-extra-secret shit we're letting out."

If his mission was really freedom and not narcissism, shouldn't the way govts treat him have nothing to do w/ what he does and does not release it? If he has documents the people should see, let us see them. If they're dangerous and serve no purpose (and i like letting multiple newspapers do the vetting, its an imperfect but workable solution to a thorny issue) then him getting brought up on charges should not affect their releasability either.

tl;dr: Both "thank you" and "fuck you" julian.

This is not about any one man. This has been expected for a long time and will continue for a long time. Here's a bit of history from 1996 that should get you up to speed on what this is really all about:

You're… you're right.

I think the so-called arrogance is really just computer-geekness writ very very large. This is the best comment so far on the reason why we need Wikileaks. And yeah, it is not going to stop just because Assange is in jail.

Art Yucko (#1,321)

Way to Assange the Ratio.

I like that twee picture of Assange they used on The Business Insider's page; he looks like a member of The Vaselines.
