Chernobyl: The Most Awesome Tourist Destination

"Background radiation in the accident zone is still well above normal," says CNN, about the Chernobyl exclusion zone, which is going to be opened to tourists! Awesome. I would love to go see this, actually. But also, says CNN, "visitors receive a dose comparable to the exposure they would receive on a trans-Atlantic flight." Got that? High radiation; just like flying to London.

Wait, what?

Just like flying to London, in that there is a significant chance that you will get glassed.

I would LOVE to go to Chernobyl. Related: There is a lot wrong with me.

As anyone who has seen my Flickr account can attest, there's nothing I love more than crumbling remains of buildings – the more monolithic, the better.

I've lost more than one weekend to fuckyeahghosttowns…

I saw a 6 ft long catfish in the cooling pond there. Was told it was "totally normal."

I saw a 3 ft long gummy worm at the Awl Bawl. Was told it was "totally normal."

Save the radiation exposure: http://englishrussia.com/index.php/2006/09/13/lost-city-of-chernobyl/ It really is thrilling.

Do you get the feeling that the author/photographer there isn't so sure about radiation being dangerous?

Former residents have been returning to the exclusion zone unofficially for some time now. Part of my extended family was evacuated from the area and has never gone back, though I think that their reluctance to return has more to do with the circumstances of their leaving rather than the lack of a legitimate option for visiting.

Actually, you (awl people) have to fly to Chernobyl to get to Chernobyl, so technically you would get both doses on that trip (plus the trip back)

Think of what an amazing opportunity this is for Call of Duty fanboys to play laser tag.

I want a Scottish tour guide in a ghillie suit to lead me through the ruins, opening his monologue with "Fifty-thousand people used to live here, now it's a ghost town…"

How will the Stalkers react to these interlopers on their turf?
