Serious Newspaper Article About Parody Newspaper Article Has To Be A Joke, Right?

I mean, did they invent some new kind of "meta" and not tell me about it? Anti-meta? So confused!

Vice President Joseph R. Biden Jr. has never smashed a Whac-A-Mole game in a drunken fit. He has never invoked Freedom of Information laws to find out a female federal employee’s work schedule. And to the best of anyone’s knowledge, he has never washed his car in the White House driveway.

But to readers of The Onion, the satirical newspaper and Web site, the vice president has done all of those things, plus bounce a check for $39.50 to a liquor store and star in advertisements for Hennessy cognac that emphasize his international playboy swagger.

Right? What? That paper will write about ANYONE.

I love how this paragraph (which is already silly enough)…

This kind of humor does pose a risk for the comedians writing it, because it could easily fall flat with readers who are accustomed to more traditional forms of satire. Even some of the boldest comedy writers said they would be wary of trying it with their audiences.

…is immediately followed by a quote from an SNL writer. Yes: Even the iconoclasts who brought us "Deep House Dish" are hesitant to tread there. Whoa!

A spokesman for Mr. Biden, Jay Carney, said the vice president was unavailable to be interviewed about his portrayal in The Onion. “Let me get this straight: You want to interview the vice president about stories about him in The Onion?” Mr. Carney asked, sounding at once amused and dumbfounded by the request.

Psst, NYT: Maybe that was a sign that the story was a really, really dumb idea, hmm?

I read The Onion sometimes, but I didn't actually think Joey B. had done those things. Am I reading it wrong?
