Alcohol Is The Awesomest, Deadliest Drug

Hey, dopeheads, smack addicts, meth freaks and the rest of you: SUCK IT HARD!

Alcohol is more dangerous than illegal drugs like heroin and crack cocaine, according to a new study.

British experts evaluated substances including alcohol, cocaine, heroin, ecstasy and marijuana, ranking them based on how destructive they are to the individual who takes them and to society as a whole.

Researchers analyzed how addictive a drug is and how it harms the human body, in addition to other criteria like environmental damage caused by the drug, its role in breaking up families and its economic costs, such as health care, social services, and prison.

That's right, while you're shooting your very genteel heroin up your arm, I am heroically battling death with every sweet sip of poison I drop down my throat. New livers be damned! Who are the real daredevils? Us, the bold, risk-taking alcoholics. I expect some respect.

Wait, Balk thinks he's a badass for drinking ethyl alcohol?

Just a wild guess, but I\'m thinking the costs of alcoholism to society are so much greater because more people are alcoholics. If everyone who had a drink at lunch shot up instead, our whole fucking world would be like the Wire, in a bad way.

I find that impossible to believe – figuring out the total amount of harm rather than harm per person is such an elementary error that it's difficult to believe they didn't consider it. However, I think there are other errors that could be made – one of the problems with alcohol is that it's legal, so you can go out to the bars and tie one on… so you end up with a lot of trouble as a result of drunk driving. I'd venture to say that weed users are more likely to do it at home, where they're less likely to affect others. But if weed were legal, you might find more stoned drivers. It can be hard to figure out a way to study that kind of thing.

From The Lancet:

Members of the Independent Scientific Committee on Drugs, including two invited specialists, met in a 1-day interactive workshop to score 20 drugs on 16 criteria: nine related to the harms that a drug produces in the individual and seven to the harms to others. Drugs were scored out of 100 points, and the criteria were weighted to indicate their relative importance.

MCDA modelling showed that heroin, crack cocaine, and metamfetamine were the most harmful drugs to individuals (part scores 34, 37, and 32, respectively), whereas alcohol, heroin, and crack cocaine were the most harmful to others (46, 21, and 17, respectively). Overall, alcohol was the most harmful drug (overall harm score 72), with heroin (55) and crack cocaine (54) in second and third places.

I don't think the results can be accepted with full confidence.

Got a fridge full of Four Loko if anyone wants to come over.

Same, but without the invitation.

Hang on…. this is a British study. I think we should take it with a grain of salt/a pint.

boyofdestiny (#1,243)

Careful. That grain of salt is perched on the edge of a shard of glass.

Yeah, I confirmed this on the Lancet site. All the data came from UK populations,

So? Didn't you see "Trainspotting"?

Turn on, tune in, drop out.

It's funny. You can cold turkey any drug, except alcohol. The hard core drinkers you have to wean off slowly otherwise the shock will literally kill them.

Of course the big problem with illegal drugs is the fact that the "cocaine" is 70% Draino, 25% baby powder and 5% Real drug.

A quick google search shows that Benzodiazepines can also be fatal in withdrawal; if more people were abusing Xanax, there would probably be more Benzodiazepine withdrawl-related problems.

Funny thing though: they sometimes prescribe benzos to ease people off alcohol.

First, the pictured beverage is also awesome.

Second, those other users would have no bragging rights at all if their choice of poison was legalized.

zidaane (#373)

There are no kids walking around because their parents got a little too high on weed last night. There's just no Doritos for lunch.

Baboleen (#1,430)

Although I don't know you, Balk, you were the first person I thought of when I read this.
