Here Are Your Geniuses

"Obviously, I'm very grateful but I have a vague sense of not belonging."
-David Simon ("The Wire," "Treme") reacts to being named one of this year's John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation "geniuses." Other names among the 23 recipients of the $500,000 award include pianist Jason Moran, director David Cromer and author Annette Gordon-Reed. The real surprise here is that Simon, upon being told he was a genius, didn't respond by saying, "No fucking shit."

THIS DOESN'T MAKE TREME LESS BORING.

Nicolas Lemann has a great article on exactly that topic in the NYRB.

@JD: I see what you did there.

I kind of love to hate on Treme. I watched all of it and complained the whole time. Why did that poor fiddler girl stay with her loser Dutch street musician boyfriend? Why do I care about the Indians and their massive feathered costumes? I'm still angry at John Goodman's character for committing suicide and leaving his noble wife and darling daughter alone. And WHY DON'T THEY EVER USE THE CHARACTERS NAMES?

Can today be Choire/Balk dueling-posts-on-the-same-subjects day? pretty please?

What do you do with MacArthur grants, anyway? If it were me I'd commish a statue of myself looking super thoughtful and install it in my garden so people passing my house would know a genius lived there.

dntsqzthchrmn (#2,893)

I'd heard of one fellow who used some of the money to reinforce the structural supports of his house, which was collapsing under the weight of his books.

A house! With books in it!

A this point I would lean toward pitching the books, and most of the house, and living with plants in a greenhouse. Now all I need is a grant.

dntsqzthchrmn (#2,893)

We should all start referring to each other as fellows. Or Comrades, as Psmith does.

E.G.: Comrade Propertius, sequester those greenhouse gases well and you may well be a fellow afore long.

SeanP (#4,058)

Obviously, you invest it in hookers and blow.

propertius (#361)

Charmin, my plants are going to devote every chloroplast to saving the world from global warming.

ComradePsmith (#4,477)

I find myself in agreement with Comrade Dntsqzthchrmn.

propertius (#361)

I guess I have to emend my reply then. To Comrade Charmin it is!

Well thank god someone getting millions of dollars from HBO to make prime-time television programs got a $500,000 genius grant. I'm sure that will really help with his pool repairs.

Niko Bellic (#1,312)

To add insult to injury: I'd buy David Simon a drink anytime.

barnhouse (#1,326)

Yeah! I thought this was supposed to go to people who would be helped to progress in their work without the burden of poverty?

deepomega (#1,720)

@mike: It's not called the MacArthur poor person grant.

Oh silly, you think people who develop shows like that make "millions"? Only the actors make that kind of money.

HiredGoons (#603)

Annette Gordon-Reed yay!

jrb (#3,020)

Word!
