Why Just Read A Magazine When You Can Hold Your Smartphone Over It And Watch MAGIC Happen?

German magazine Sueddeutsche Zeitung (the title can be loosely translated as "This Is A Periodical For Those Who Own Cats Or Are Simply Delighted By Photos And Stories Concerning Their Activities, Particularly When They Are Still Kittens, Plus There Are Many Columns Offering Advice And Personal Anecdotes") has created "the world's first mobile augmented reality special magazine edition." Look! You can finally get alt-text tags into print! Industry: SAVED. [Via]

I'm glad every AR video makes it look like I'm watching a nickelodeon in 1899. The future will be frame-drop-y.

I am going to leave my second old person comment of the day - I don't get this. Does this really make people more inclined to buy a magazine?

Or maybe I just don't appreciate smartphones? (I have one. I use it almost exclusively for making phone calls and as an alarm clock. I am planning in the very near future to downgrade to regular phone because I want something smaller.)

Okay, but what if instead of being called "Sueddeutsche Zeitung," which is kind of clunky, the magazine was called "Juggs"? And also, you were 14?

Just thinking about those circumstances (being a 14-year-old boy) is horrifying. But good point. (Though I suppose we have to pretend the internet also doesn't exist?)

When you say "cats" and "kittens," I think you mean "Knut."

I'm waving my phone at a magazine and nothing is happening. Do I need a cordless phone?

I'd like to thank you belatedly for isolating this line.

Not to get uptight and German on you, but The Sueddeutsche Zeitung is a newspaper. It has its own magazine, like The New York Times has The New York Times Magazine.

Time to get back to those kittens and their activities, which you know I follow with delight.

I picked up the Sueddeutsche Zeitung Magizin's 'Amerika' special issue when I was in transit through Munich a couple of years ago. The cover (and contents) are quite fetching:

Mr. Cho. Why don't you sign up for Microsoft Tag and you can put that stuff all over these pages? It will be fun for awhile.

Marc Stromberg + T-post's wearable augmented reality magazine is still my favorite:

I like how creepy the shouts are.

Esquire and InStyle already did this last year.

I heard the next gen Zune will be able to play old CDs by pointing it at them while holding both items really still. That's how stupid this is.
