The Job Board: Have a Job? Want One? Inquire Within!

LET'S DO THIS THINGI'm trying an experiment here. Do you need a job? Do you need an employee? Well come in and explain yourselves! What happens if we throw this post open, make it sort of like the corner by a Home Depot in the mornings, and see what results?

yes. i am.

Exactly. What do you know about? What can you bring? Lay it out!

Ah ha. So that explains the guy by our HD on Sundays with the sign that reads, "JESUS SAVES EXPERIENCED CARPENTER."

I didn't know if he was a real carpenter, or just an ironist with a Sharpee.

Senor Saves does good work.

You mean, you want me to hire someone smarter and wittier than I am? I may be stupid, but I'm not that stupid.

What the stifled job market actually needs is more liquidity.

@Mount Prion - my company is hiring here in DC for admin type work as well as other stuff. re: anal- top/bottom or flexible?

I am looking for a better job in the DC area. I found out yesterday that my boss has been calling me his secretary to other people which I am NOT. My title is communications specialist.

@BadUncle: Nope, but we've got an office there where the majority of my staff is.

If there are any lines in Boston to drop, I, err, will quit cut back drastically on my Awl habit to make ends meet appropriately.

garge
garge (#736)

Summary of qualifications: I am manic paraprofessional dreamgirl. I have worked every corner of the library beat, but lets acknowledge that library administrators don't headhunt and that admin assisting is where the real bling is to be found.

I have a soothing phone voice that gives an impression of patient efficiency and am compulsively on time. I like business casual attire and my steam cleaner has the Good Housekeeping Seal of Approval; no track marks or visible tattoos. I alt-tab like a pro, am comfortable improvising CPR, and have excellent posture.

My background is in fine art, so you can not pay me extra to take care of all of your photo and design needs; I can teach you to lithograph anything.

OK, so I will also be a cocktail waitress at your Beacon Hill private house party, or whatever you need, Boston, because I need the extra work.

This job board is very timely! aka.garge @ gmaildot com.

Great idea! Let's all get cool new jobs, guys! Me, I'm in New York City and I'm looking for something in new media creation - audio is my specialty, but I do video, too. Podcasts, video for web, that sort of thing. That, or something in the social media field. I've experience in that, too.

jfruh
jfruh (#713)

Hi everybody! I have two separate and (mostly) distinct professional lives, and I would be interested in being paid to pursue either of them, for you!

1) I write ostensibly funny things for my comics blog, which is well-read and made me pretend Internet famous, and I also blog several times weekly these days for Wonkette, the Awl's spirit brother! Do you need funny things written by a funny person? I could be that person.

2) I also am a tech editor of more than a decade's standing. Most of my focus has been on IT stuff, but I've also done work on academic research papers in the life sciences and social sciences. Basically I am good at taking poorly constructed prose written by non-writers about subjects that make most liberal arts majors flee in terror and turning them into readable English. If you want to look at a more or less up to date resume for this part of my life, click here. There are references!

Also, the blogging and tech sides of my life intersect in this blog I write about Java programming, if that's the sort of thing you're after.

Also also there is a rumor that a friend of mine and I wrote a script for comedy movie, and have a couple other treatments in the work! But you didn't hear this from me (unless you are a bigshot movie producer who wants to write us a check).

jfruh
jfruh (#713)

Blogger, writer, editor, researcher. Based in Washington, DC. I know (almost) everything about Twitter, Tumblr, Wordpress, dabble in website coding, can take decent photos, and know how to swing dance. Also have the full roster of office skills (Excel, email, answering the phone, etc.)

Currently paid to research and write SEO-heavy articles about quack cures and beauty aids (which are increasingly looking the same), with occasional dips into science, sewing, cooking, and engineering. Volunteer photo curator at Genderfork.com, where I find photos celebrating androgyny. Recently started a series on the same site called "Gender Heroes".

Ideal job would be producing content/copy for a small website, or working as an assistant editor/copyeditor. Email at stratton.erica@gmail.com.

YES! I would like a job. here is a teaser from my resume:

Skills:
Pretend Biligualist. Since my current position has it in the title, it's pretty much fact at this point.

Can write amazing, marketable, catchy pop song about any topic in 5 minutes time, provided that song is about my cat, and the stupid things he does. Great chord changes though!

"Gets" facebook and social networks. Plan to see upcoming facebook movie starring the poor man's Michael Cera.

Weaknesses:
Is a Millenial, so will probably feel entitled to more money within a week of employment, and since I have no loyalty, I will find work elsewhere should my entitlement not be fulfilled.

Is 'perfectionist' a weakness or a strength? I guess it's both. Anyways, let's put that for weakness.

Favourite movie is Predator 2. This could also be considered a strength.

I do fundraising (grant proposals, planned giving programs, appeal materials, etc.) planning and communications (PR, literature, websites, etc.) for non-profits. My clients are mostly in science, education and conservation, but I've worked for social services and arts organizations too.

I love to write about science.

In the past 18 months I've had a crazy little dalliance with fine art publishers doing color and image correction for manuscripts. I worked on http://radiusbooks.org/books/ed-moses.html and http://www.amazon.com/Frederick-Hammersley/dp/0982373600.

NinetyNine
NinetyNine (#98)

I do all the design and web stuff that's been mentioned several times, but who hires designers for that these days?

What I do that most others don't is high-end PowerPoint -- full range of consumer/B2B/professional services/fin services experience. One-offs for high profile meetings (Investor Day, Seminars, etc.), First Call templates or custom sales presentations, templates for general use, recruiting decks, and a really deep bench of samples for intricate information design.

When somebody in a meeting asks: why does our PowerPoint suck? I'm the person you are supposed to call. My credentials are so strong I'm can't tell you my client list over the phone (NDAs -- the bane of bragging).

Everyone wants three things: fast, good, cheap. Pick the right two, since I don't do the third.

I don't expect much lean gen from this crowd. I love y'all, but the writer/editor/media crowd doesn't throw off a lot of opportunity for this kind of thing, unless you do sales/media kits.

nic.musolino at gmail

joeclark
joeclark (#651)

WTF is your last graf supposed to mean? Don't shit in the pool, 66.

NinetyNine
NinetyNine (#98)

Just what it says. I'd hazard 70% of the active Awl readership (people who run deep into comments) are loosely aligned with media/publishing (active or aspiring writers), or other realms of content production. Even at the high end of that segment, there is next to no budget for what I do. But something like Gawker's media kit, which is abysmal (and available online -- check it out), doesn't necessarily require my services (value is value, but if you are on an 80/20 model, ehh, I'm probably only going to add incrementally at the thin end of the wedge for someone like GM). If a brand is strong and the sales force competent, a mediocre deck won't kill a deal. I argue that quality adds value regardless, but not everyone operates at the highest possible level along the sales continuum. So if you feel like everything is hitting on all cylinders but the visuals, and you have good cash flow, hiring me makes sense. I don't do sales for sales sake. Not my style and not my market. In any boutique space, it's always important to attract the appropriate prospects and also to clearly dissuade bad matches quickly.

joeclark
joeclark (#651)

You're not making any sense. And I assume you meant "lead generation."

Nebulous jibjab like this probably goes over great with the clueless middle managers you somehow persuade you can help for a price.

My boyfriend needs a job. He is a jack-of-all-trades with a law degree. Skilled in electronics, sound, computers, websites, bikes, carpentry. Anyone like that read the Awl - or just need an inexpensive, down-to-earth lawyer for your store/start-up/music festival/artistic endeavor?

Hi.

I have an M.Phil in Mesolithic Archaeology but I spend most of my days doing exploring western North America (and some of eastern) for Gold, Copper, Uranium, Palladium and Platinum deposits.

I also run the inhouse corporate finance division, of a couple junior mining companies and in my spare time I help my friend analyze he excavation data, and regional landscape implications from http://tiny.cc/gz3tz .

I think I maybe posted this. But my work is hiring. It's in Detroit, in the arts (hell maybe just froze over). An entry level development position. see www.detroitchamberwinds.org for details. Perfect for the crazy kid who got a degree in nonprofit arts management.

Hire me in NYC. Based on actual experience, I can; write excellent criticism of culture, especially music, manage an IT infrastructure, design and build information architecture, write readable and informative technical documents, analyze fixed income securities (including CDOs), develop audio and media tools and produce music via DAWs. I can do more, too. Would like a job with a baby on the way.

I may be hiring in Minneapolis.
Television production.
PAs who are supremely organized and can handle media management (P2, tape, time lapse cams, hard drives, crap deliverable stuff).

Also, interior designers who aren't divas, are flexible and won't cause me to want to kill them.

Also, contractors. Drywall, tile, electricians, plumbers. The pay is essentially network exposure, but you would only be working for a couple of days, so it might be worth it. Also, free food and generally booze. Though, the booze is usually after the power tools are put away. Plus, the gigs are really fun.

I might know someone who is good for this. He has an industrial design degree and has a wide variety of skills with different materials (including woodworking). Basically he can fix or build nearly anything and it will be bulletproof. I can give him your info if you tell me what it is?

My best friend needs a job, in Seattle. He's a project manager for corporate media stuff, like those websites and magazines dedicated to just one kind of fancy car. He is brilliant, kind, patient, competent. A grown-up, also. If you can maybe use such a person, please contact me at dorkismo at gmail . com.

I am a recent college dropout who (formerly!!) majored in the "Nonmajor" discipline. I have previously worked at Fazoli's and my father's basement doing miscellaneous handy-work for his business.

I have extreme experience in the Microsoft Office Suite Bundle Pack and can do anything that involves stapling.

I can also rake your leaves.

I'm available any time to work, but prefer to work from 10-3 Monday through Friday. My old frat brothers sometimes call me for a Highday Friday still though, so depending on when Shark Week is, I can't work Fridays.

If I have one strength it's my strength. I'm really strong.

If I have one weakness it's I'm easily confused by street signs and simple directions.

If you'd like to contact me, just beep me on my Motorolla.

I know someone who was recently offered a position as a general reporter in a Midwest college town, but he writes excellent critical commentary on music, specifically how classical and pop are intertwined. That is a terrible description for a I know he'd be down for any freelancing or contributor work.

A snippet, from his writeup about Christmas Music:

"John Lennon - "Happy Xmas (The War is Over)"
When the group was still together, The Beatles had a holiday tradition of sending out complete Christmas albums to members of their fan club. Clearly not fans of this obligation, the other part of that tradition was to record them while piss drunk. After the group split Lennon wrote "Happy Xmas," Paul McCartney on the other hand wrote "A Wonderful Christmas Time," not to advocate assassination, but I think we shot the wrong one."

I am looking for a job in Los Angeles. I do seasonal contract work as a screener and programmer for film festivals. But year-round programming work is scarce.

I'm also a writer. My Facebook page has a cult following, except for my mom, who is blocked.

Does the Awl need a West Coast writer?

Oh, and finally, I do politically-oriented pranks and culturejamming stuff. I'm always looking for new projects to consult for. Check out my site.

Oh yeah, and I can do filing and Excel spreadsheets and make coffee. But no blowjob before jacuzzi.

I want to make a living through writing or musicking or at least do something maker-y as my bread and butter, but I can't get out of my head the idea that I need a "day job" before I can focus on honing my maker skills to commodity standards.

Upon closer inspection of the comments here (I'm still getting use to the idea that there are comments "worth reading" on places like The Awl), I suppose I ought to throw up some stuff I've done. Made. Written. Whatever.

Fearing I may make a fool of myself by attempting unsupported HTML, y'all're gettin' raw links.

So uh hey I will write for you, and though I am aware that I'm just a child with a tumblr, even an 'internship' could be the kick in the ass I need to make more words come out of me. Sorry I missed the boat on that "hiring everyone who applies, lol!" internship rollcall earlier, Choire - I was busy being unemployed while ignoring some of the internet for a while.

Also I've been an accountant for five years now, I guess.

I sit at my house and listen to music, all day every day, and then write about it. Oddly enough, some people actually pay me to do this -- the checks clear, fer serious! I would like more people to pay me more money to keep this up, as I've really gotten used to the idea of working without pants. Also, my cat would miss me and I might lose the "barely hanging onto my sanity" edge that has really fueled my career, so, ya, I'd prefer not to end up in an office. And -- most importantly -- I live in Nashville so I can actually live on shitty freelance rates! No seriously, I listened to the entire Ryan Adams catalog for forty bucks -- I'm desperate AND I'm cheap...

This thread is very long, so maybe this won't get noticed, but ...

I need advice on short-term jobs. I'm working on my own and shooting a documentary over the next 30 days. When I come back I need some short term temp stuff in TV/Film production or writing in DC, but I also need time off here and there for post-production on my own project (hence the need for short 1-2 week projects). Any thoughts?

Hi, I just started a writing services partnership with two other young people. Basically, we're collaborative contractors and we're looking for clients. Here's our website: http://www.fresh-copy.net.

We offer all sorts of writing services (ad writing, taglines, website copy, articles, grant application) and work by telecommute. Our 'Creative Associate' is a student at Miami Ad School, and I've written for nationally syndicated TV, NPR, and lots of start-ups. I'm currently blogging for Thought Catalog--you can find my articles here: http://thoughtcatalog.com/author/brandon-scott-gorrell/.

I'm interested in any writing positions that are 100% telecommute. As Fresh Copy's contractors collaborate, we're able to handle a fairly wide range of writing. I'm also interested in any client referrals or leads that anyone could give me. Please, anyone, email me at brandon@fresh-copy.net.

Not to sound desperate. But you know.
