Industry That Disappeared All Its Jobs "Giving a Lift" to Economy? Unlikely!

SO LONG, FAREWELL....Eh, I'm lightly losing my mind over this opening paragraph: "Factory owners have been adding jobs slowly but steadily since the beginning of the year, giving a lift to the fragile economic recovery. And because they laid off so many workers – more than two million since the end of 2007 – manufacturers now have a vast pool of people to choose from." Setting aside that the article goes on to explain that these "factories" are not looking for floor muscle, they're actually looking for low-end coders and analysts, and therefore just can't find anyone to hire, can we all read those two sentences again? The industry that laid of millions… is giving a lift… to the recovery… that is not much of a recovery… because of layoffs…. So, one thing that would help is if everyone could stop looking at everything in terms of "this quarter over last"? Is a little historical context too much to ask? Here, like so! "Since early last summer, factories have cut more than one million jobs, or 5.4 percent of their payrolls, and fewer people now work in a manufacturing plant than at any time since 1964." Oh, that's from September 8, 2001. But surely unrelated. [Photo by TheeErin.]

"We burned the village to save it."

Oh, and if anyone believes that the unemployment rate going down from 9.7 to 9.5 % is good news, stop. It is not.

Inside the numbers shows that over 650,000 have left the work force. This means that they are not counted as "unemployed". Rather, those are the people who have gave up looking for employment.

So then what exactly? Everyone is running around screaming "double dip, double dip", but what the fuck does that actually do but create more panic?

You are right. Better to be fooled.

Not fooled. Just not panicked either. Panic clouds thinking.

I just figured it was a test run of the rapture.

Our local megachurch parking lot has been looking a bit sparse of late.

"Disappeared" – I love the image of the jobs being airlifted in the middle of the night to a secret prison in a third world country. MAINLY BECAUSE IT IS NOT ALL THAT FAR FROM THE TRUTH.

It's the Bulimia Economy(tm)!

roboloki (#1,724)

how are we supposed to overtax the poors if they don't have jobs?

Tulletilsynet (#333)

Corporations are mean. Stop pretending you're not being mean, factory owner!

barnhouse (#1,326)

Hilarious (if grimly so) to see our corporate overlords slowly realizing that there is nothing left to steal.

Why do y'awl romanticize manufacturing jobs… America still makes a lot of stuff, with THE MACHINES

"..low-end coders and analysts…" ???

OH COME ON PEOPLE!! Haven't any of you ever lied your way into a
bar-tending job? Just find out what these jobs mean, fake your resume,
and go in with it. The worst is that you will be called back 3 times
(to test your annoyance skills). Find a person down the ladder at the old GM
(or say your granddad worked for Studebaker) and just send in the resume.

If you can disassemble a laptop using iFixit.com, then you can do whatever damn "coding" job they need done. ESPECIALLY at entry level.

If you are uncomfortable trying this, pretend you are a journalist,
doing research on 'getting a job.'

(unless it involves the Dewey Decimal System; then I give up)

But really, when was the last time honesty got your resume anywhere?
Fake it! (except for your degree)

they want to play hardball, you play hardball. This isn't just your life–
it's drinking money at stake here!

ow that hurt (#3,919)

Oh wait– "low-end coder"…. why would would you want that job
anyway?

Never Mind!
