Bobby Bonilla Teaches Us A Lesson About Interest

uh huh uh huhHappy July 1! It's now only 365 days until the Mets start paying Bobby Bonilla his deferred compensation package, which consists of him being paid $1.2 million every July 1 from 2011 through 2035 because the Mets didn't want to give him the $5.9 million they owed him in 2000! I have cut and pasted five or six different bits of this Wall Street Journal piece on exactly why and how this fiasco happened for inclusion here, because they're all just so cringe/facepalm-worthy. But you should go read the whole thing, because at the very least, it's a nice primer for any future labor negotiations you might have! [Image via]

Also as my friend Dan noted: "The Mets are 1 1/2 games out of first on July 1, 2010. Fact: They were two games out July 1, 2009." HAPPY BASEBALL SEASON EVERYBODY!

Chase Utley, get well soon. Luis Castillo, Carlos Beltran, Jose Reyes, Angel Pagan, you guys too. (Especially Reyes and Pagan.)

Well, I'M not going to write the Steve Phillips joke.

"Hey," Mr. Bonilla said, "a blind squirrel can find an acorn."

brent_cox (#40)

Steve conspired to make his mismanagement of the Mets irrelevant a year or two ago.

Mo Vaughn will continue to receive a 10% discount at participating area Shake Shack locations as part of his deferred compensation package.

Mo Vaughn deserves it. Dude was a former MVP. Give him 15%

I'm most excited about the KLF alt-text / image joke. But, uh, yeah. Baseball. Lots of money in baseball.

But what about Andy Van Slyke???

iantenna (#5,160)

funny, but still not as funny as a-rod helping to bankrupt a team he hasn't played for in 6 years.

Bonilla was a good player until that 12-year old on the Cubs showed him up.
