Tolkien Obsessives Will Get Whole New Thing To Bitch About

Not this oneGenius director Guillermo Del Toro, scheduled to helm the two Hobbit films that serve as prequel to Lord of the Rings, has withdrawn from the project, citing the "ongoing delays in the setting of a start date for filming." Producer Peter Jackson, who won an Oscar for his direction on the LOTR movies, has not ruled out taking over, pending availability: "If that's what I have to do to protect Warner Brothers' investment, then obviously that's one angle which I'll explore." One thing is for certain: Who ever winds up taking the job will face an angry online mob complaining about how he or she is doing it wrong, because that's just the way it works.

Most nerds I know are pretty down with Jackson's work on LoTR. So I don't think too many people would complain about that switch.

We are talking about the same nerds who bitched about losing Tom Bombadil, here.

Good. Del Toro belongs back on the At The Mountains of Madness project that has been languishing–languishing!–while he gallivants about winning awards.

Yeah, you think Tolkien/Star Trek/Star Wars nerds are bad (they are) just wait until the Lovecraft Kidz get something thrown their way!

Bilbo appears to have Down Syndrome.

Oh, great. I was looking forward to rent something new to nap through. LOTR movies almost surpass cable TV fishing shows for their reliable, torpor-inducing tedium. But a man can only sleep through so many pounds of bass and tarpin before he craves the reliable, ambien-like qualities of a wizards-and-elf caper.

There is no greater sleep than the sleep induced by the slow, deep voices of the Ents.
