The article links to a Wikipedia page chronicling deaths and injuries from bombs concealed in bicycles. If bikes can be wired to explode, am I more or less right in assuming that just about anything can?

Well this certainly allays my fears that after Bush America would no longer be able to support the same deranged mess of irrational security policies I'd come to know and love over the last ten years.
They've done this before on a street in the East Village for no good reason. I think some insane person just complained about all the bikes locked to streetsigns, which is technically illegal even though there is nowhere NEAR enough parking available for bikes in the city. This shit needs to stop happening.
