And where, exactly, do "science writers" fit into this? Most have neither science degrees nor makeup-application skills.

you know, if i were in the meteorologist camp, i'd keep my head down on this one; in fact --- on anything that calls attention to what i "do".
what other gig on earth has marketing consultants telling your bosses that you're the most important piece of talent in the operation .... AND you get to be massively incompetent and catastrophically wrong everyday ... with no consequences --- except free suits and haircuts.

Growing up in NYC, you learned watching local news that only the sports and weather guys are allowed to have New York or ethnic accents. Then Sam Champion bravely turned away from the gay porn career his name was clearly marking as his destiny, and upset that applecart.

Yes, most weathermen are rather stupid, and always wrong. Did you graduate college, even a crap state school? You are just as equally qualified to be a "meteorologist" then.
