Is It Curtains for Nasty Pope Ratzi?

OH DEARA thirty-year campaign by hundreds of deaf Catholic school students to get a chronic child-abusing priest removed and then prosecuted was largely ignored until, in the 90s, an attempt to resolve the outrage in the community resulted in an appeal to the Vatican-to the desk of Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger, who is now the Pope. While Pope Ratzi was no doubt confused by the issue of timeliness, he first refused to respond to the inquiry and then his office declined to put the molester on trial. So the very head of the Catholic Church is directly implicated in multiple coverups of and inaction regarding child abuse. Whatever do we think the Church will do?

I'm going to guess nothing. Is it nothing?

yes that.

Regina Small (#2,468)

Correct. Sigh.

kneetoe (#1,881)

He's done. But to get rid of a pope you have to come up with a really creative murder scheme.

Hobbesian (#255)

Someone call Dan Brown.

conklin (#364)

Maybe whoever is above him in the org chart can quietly reassign him to a different Vatican?

Again, someone call Dan Brown!

DoctorDisaster (#1,970)

I don't think you can impeach the Pope.

An ambitious cardinal could pizen his wholly water.

NinetyNine (#98)

Since the only real remaining constituency left in the Catholic Church is child molesters and those who love to cover them up, resigning would seem like an odd way to play to the proverbial base.

scroll_lock (#4,122)

I like it that you're #98 and NinetyNine.

NinetyNine (#98)

(Oh, and to head off the Abe Sauer 'you don't know dick about molesting priests in the midwest' post, I am preemptively noting I was raised Catholic in Ohio, was an altar boy and quit when one of my parish priests was accused of molestation [one of three parishes he was shipped to -- eventually he went to jail, so it works sooner or later]. I wasn't, and a friend came up with the idea of suing because my self-esteem was hindered by not being chosen — well before that It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia ep).

scroll_lock (#4,122)

Wow. That's like suing McDonald's for not making you fat.

jolie (#16)

@NinetyNine: Preemptive Commentation. Nice.

Matt (#26)

@Jolie: You go to war with the asshole blogs you have.

NinetyNine (#98)

There are known assholes and there are unknown assholes and there are the unknown assholes you know are assholes.

They should pull the EuroTrip-type scenario!

A pede in the 'mobile is better than two in the bush?

Renate (#360)

Ratzi, the molester protector, isn't going anywhere. His infallibility kicked in when the white smoke went up and nothing he does from that time forth can be questioned by the faithful. Ratzi did Penance and absolved himself, and no doubt a few others, in that letter he sent out last week. As far as he's concerned, problem handled.

cherrispryte (#444)

Nasty Pope Ratzi? Or Nazi Pope Ratzi? Amirite?

Moff (#28)

Could the Cardinals declare Benny an Anti-Pope? And if not the Cardinals, what about the Yankees?

Thank you, Hawkeye Pierce.

katiebakes (#32)

Catholicism WOW!

sunnyciegos (#551)

Please tell me someone else here has read "The Road To Gandolfo."

Err… Someone else here has read "The Road To Gandolfo," in all probability. But not me.

barnhouse (#1,326)

They can resign the office freely. So it stands to reason that they can be MADE to resign, though none has done so since the mid-15th c. But if I were a cardinal I would be … no, forget it.

HiredGoons (#603)

'Joseph Ratzinger' sounds like the villain in the next direct-to-DVD 'An American Tail' sequel.

ow that hurt (#3,919)

yeah, why didn't he choose a more pleasant stage name, like
"Betty White" ?

HonoriaGlossop (#1,247)

According to St Malachi, Ratzo Rizzo is the second to last pope before the end of the world. And as I have a weakness for Irishmen (be 12th or 21st century), I firmly believe we're all doomed. DOOMED!

This fits in rather well with 2012 and Cthulu/the Kraken. (That said, based on my skimming the Wiki entry, doesn't the prophecy just say Rome will be destroyed, not the whole world?)

HonoriaGlossop (#1,247)

I think the translation zeroes in on Rome, but it's interpreted as referring to the church as a whole. So then "the fearsome Judge will judge his people" and Armageddon sets in… Some people even think the last pope will be the Antichrist. Wheee!

LittleLolly (#458)

Time to move the papacy back to Avingon?

jetztinberlin (#392)

I am so disappointed this did not run right next to the "Do You Type Like a Pedophile" story.
