Sad rap news. Keith "Guru" Elam, MC in the beloved duo Gang Starr, is apparently in a coma after suffering a heart attack. He's scheduled to undergo surgery later today. Here's wishing him a full recovery. Above, the video for the classic, "Mass Appeal," which was the definitive sound of the New York City streets my first summer living here, 1994.

During the Summer of Death, I heard Guru interviewed on NPR and I had this moment of panic where I thought he was dead--anyone and everyone seemed ready to go then. I was totally relieved to hear he was alive and was being interviewed for the 15 year anniversary (!) of the release of Jazzmatazz. Here's hoping he recovers quickly and completely.
He still has one of the best voices in all of rap, ever. Pull through!
He's "the Jerry Rice to this: much too nice to quit"
And agreed, he does have one of the all-time greatest rap voices.
oh HELL no.
Please don't add your name to this long list, 'Ru.
