Anish Kapoor's Insane Olympic Tower
Holy Jesus, they're really going to build this Anish Kapoor structure in London for the Olympics. Higher than the Statue of Liberty! I unabashedly love Kapoor and think he's a genius and this is kind of amazing-bonkers! I wish it wasn't red though? But that's useful, because it'll disguise all the blood from the many knifecrimes that shall occur upon it.

They could make it out of recycled knives maybe?
Arghhh! After almost a year of this, I still laugh every time I read "knifecrime"
I just figured out what it means about a week ago; imagine my laughter! (my office-mates don't have to, imagine it, that is)
Those visitors will not be pleased when the mouse-trap falls.
I thought this was a shoe.
McQueen is dead.
(TOO SOON!)
I want to ride it?
It's gonna eat all those poor lil' peoples.
I'm assuming this serves to launch Jodi Foster in a wormhole.
…or what's left over when a giant spider sneezes on a birthday hat.
I like it. But it's a bit Bird's Nest-y, no? Like not in any real trained-eye-for-architecture way, but given the two structures' similar provenance, it seems like an odd choice. This is old Becky/new Becky from Roseanne ALL OVER AGAIN! It will end in a hit TV show for Zach Braff!!! Is that what you want, Anish Kapoor???
It's no Great American Scream Machine, but it'll do.
This is to be a post-games tourist attraction, and I just cannot see it working. It's miles from the centre, and I can't see people making the trip; once up there, there's nothing to see. They've been talking about it as a sort of rival to the Eiffel Tower, but London already has one in the big wheel, which is iconic, central, and gives great views.
But that's what they said about the Millennium Dome and look how…. oh yeah, you're right.
One of the simplest and yet most impressive things I've seen by Kapoor is in the Naples Museum of Fine Art. It's just a black void in the floor, that you view from behind a railing a few feet away, and you just cannot tell what you are looking at. Is it a deep yawning chasm, or is it some kind of none-more-black paint that sucks up all the light that hits it? It's an incredibly cool effect.
In comparison this tower is a bit OTT and naff, innit.
I am confused. Can I ride it?
It's actually a landing beacon for the next Dalek invasion.
In 5 years, this will be a great rusty Klein bottle at the edge of the city.
It killed me that I couldn't to get over there to see his show at the Royal Academy. (I also can't imagine what a bitch it was cleaning up all that wax.)
It reminds me of the non-functioning headphones designed by Karl Lagerfeld: http://www.elle.com/var/ezflow_site/storage/images/sandbox/trend-report-heavy-metal-fashion/el0909-trendspunk-12-238/3591189-1-eng-US/EL0909-TrendsPunk-12-238.jpg
It's an improvement from the logo: http://www.bbc.co.uk/london/content/images/2007/06/04/2012_logo_white_385x450.jpg
I agree, but I really just logged in to register my deep appreciation for your name. Nice! I love the quins.
Thanks! I love the thalos too.
I built that same tower in World of Goo

I saw this on the news with the sound turned off. My immediate reaction was (like cherryspryte and myfanwy) whoo-hoo! Best ride ever! I wanna go!
