Everyone will see what they want to see in President Obama's Q&A with the House Republican conference today-Democrats will be emboldened by the President's sometimes aggressive tone, Republicans will praise the sharp questions from their members, C-SPAN will be thrilled that people are paying attention to C-SPAN, etc.-but I think this was the part I enjoyed most.
"I mean, we've got to be careful about what we say about each other sometimes because it boxes us in in ways that makes it difficult for us to work together because our constituents start believing us. They don't know sometimes this is just politics, what you guys, you know, or folks on my side do sometimes. So just a tone of civility instead of slash-and-burn would be helpful.
The problem we have sometimes is a media that responds only to slash- and-burn-style politics. You don't get a lot of credit if I say, 'You know, I think Paul Ryan's a pretty sincere guy and has a beautiful family.' Nobody's going to run that in the newspapers, right?
(LAUGHTER)
And by the way, in case he's going to get a Republican challenge, I didn't mean it.
(LAUGHTER)
I don't want to — don't want to hurt you, man.
(LAUGHTER)"
I don't know, it made me smile, at least. (I also liked the part where he kept calling Jeb Hensarling (R-TX) "Jim.") Anyway, if you'd like to watch the whole thing, C-SPAN has it. There's also a transcript here.

Pretty please with cheddar cheese tell me that the title of this post is a throwback to this incredible and lifechanging book that I had to read in like fifth grade.
Oh my god. That, and A Light in the Forest. NJ elementary schools are all about the Lenapes. In my day (10 or so years before your day, I am guessing), we were told they "mysteriously disappeared" -- you know, like they just magically drifted back into the forest. Like the Yeti.
Did you ever go to Waterloo Village!? We used to go on at least three class trips there a year. It was like the Colonial Williamsburg of New Jersey and also featured a Lenape area with teepees and canoes and stuff.
Sadly, it appears the once-mighty has fallen:
"Once considered one of New Jersey's best school trips and a popular tourist destination, the Lenape Village has suffered from neglect in past years. Bark lodges were left to crumble, dugout canoes rotted, mortars and pestles decayed, and the exhibits were removed or ruined."
So it's like 'The Portrait of Dorian Gray' for America!
Oh wait, no... it's nothing like that.
I'll have you both know the Lenapes are still going strong (in the public schools--not, sadly, in real life, from which they mysteriously disappeared some time ago); my 8-year-old learned (almost) all about them a while back.
Oh, golly, I do remember Waterloo Village! We also went to some nature conservancy type camp up there -- Walpack?
A catastrophe for the Republicans, by any measure. If not, why would Fox have literally cut off the feed in mid-broadcast? And afterward!! It's just incredible. NO reference is being made to this bloodbath on Fox.
Innnneresting!
And the GOP aides are already whinging to Ben Smith about it!
Well, to be fair, they do come off looking awfully stupid.
Really? What I saw was a President trying to create an apologia on why the minority party was wrong for opposing bills for which their co-operation was not necessary to pass.
"But enough of that. Now let's call Sarah Palin, and I'll tell her I've just appointed her ambassador to North Korea!"
Washington Generals accuse Curly Neal's of tricky dribbling: "too fast and fascist." http://spectator.org/blog/2010/01/29/this-president-is-an-arrogant

But it would be killer if these continued happening.
