"Some pictures need little introduction. They stop you in your tracks. These are exclusive pictures to Reuters of a Canadian polar bear eating a cub that it killed and cannibalized." These pictures are EXTREMELY DISTURBING, and this is one of those "can't unsee" situations where you should think twice before clicking. But definitely forward the link to all your climate change denialist friends.

    We need a chaser of those sexy gay rams from yesterday.

    And here I thought there was no worse sight than a drowned polar bear.

    White fur, white snow;
    the mother tears the cub;
    now pink, now crimson;
    the little plush head,
    limp and hanging on long red strings.

    Cannibal, infanticide;
    humanity bleeds into nature;
    now image, now metaphor;
    the anthropomorphic reflex
    is not enough to save the world, or ourselves.

    It's a bear eat bear world out there.

    Not trying to be a denialist, but this is why momma bears are so fierce. Male bears are well known to kill cubs and sometimes the mothers even eat their young (in zoos at least).

    Hey they found a wild born baby panda in China recently, can we wash our eyes with that story now?

    I thought baby polar bears are supposed to be cute, but it turns out they are also delicious!

    Baby polar bear sashimi anyone?

  9. KenWheaton [#401]

    Not to bring up an inconvenient truth, but bears have been eating bear cubs since Jesus invented bears. Even when it's cold out and there is no warmening. You want to see something really fucked up, check out hippo cannibalism. (I'm too lazy to look for a video clip)

    I've seen mice eating their newborn, hairless babies alive.

    They squeak plaintively while being gnawed on.

    I don't have a problem with this. Not only does the clear consensus seem to be that this is not atypical behavior for male polar bears, but it's not particularly strange for other species as well, including humans in some parts of the NatGeo world!

    Animals eat each other, sometimes their own kind. It ain't pretty, but it ain't new. The end.

    In other news: humans have consistently shown a shocking tendency to kill each other in startling numbers over make-believe fairy tales and natural resources. Shocking footage abounds, check your local listings.

      Polar bears do kill each other, but cannibalistic behaviour is not usual and has not been observed over 24 years of observation. It's an indicator of stress. These bears are starving due to shrinking ice and subsequent lack of access to food.

      Saying that since other species, including humans, kill and eat each other and therefore this is not "atypical" for polar bears is disingenuous.

        The insouciance of my comment probably has more to do with my own stress level than any actual concern over or knowledge of this particular issue. I'm certainly not trying to say that these bears aren't stressed. I'll probably stick to cocktails instead of resorting to eating the flesh of young humans, but I understand the options are more limited for these guys.

      • myfanwy [#1124]

        I apologize for misinterpreting your intent; so much crap I read on other forums and news sites gets me all het up and trigger happy. I fully endorse the ingestion of cocktails over human flesh.
