"Is The American Dream Over?" Some Say Yes! Others, No! Some Shrug

by Choire posted @3:55 PM

CHATSYTimes bloggers Gail Collins and David Brooks are getting into it over, you know, the future of America and stuff. I love that they have, I guess, iChat now! Gail: When the bubble burst last year, I didn't see it as the end to our economic power. But I did wonder if it was the end of the American Dream, or at least the version we've come to regard as practically a national birthright. What do you think? If you have an encouraging response, I am prepared to embrace it wholeheartedly." David: [No Intelligible Answer].

I love that in Brooks' response he says that American works nine weeks more than most of Western Europe but it's ok because we have a higher standard of living. Really David? I'd take 9 weeks vacation over that new flatscreen any day.

They got paid to ruminate, which is about as bullseye on the American Dream as one can shoot the BB.

Collins: Americans used to be rich then some stuff happened and now they're not

Brooks: But they still have Applebees

Collins: It was a good dream until America woke up and had to pee. Can't get back to sleep.
Brooks: Cognitive fish interesting box think innovation box money word murder.

      DUH!

In case you haven't noticed a radical socialist putsch happened last January and the new regime is pushing hard in the direction of communism. Or would that be fascism? In any case, capitalism is in the crosshairs of the collectivists and being shot full of holes daily like a B-17 over Berlin in 1943.

Thus the economy is in a state of collapse.

Meanwhile, the rebel alliance marches in Tea Parties while buying up massive amounts of guns and ammunition. America stands on the edge of the abyss of counter revolution while President Zero and his cabal play golf, as clueless to the steaming volcano of revolutionary violence about to erupt, as was the French ruling elite in 1789.

There will be blood. Perhaps in the spring after the winter of our discontent.

I need to buy a model tank for my nephew for Christmas, Ron. What do you recommend?

      • Mindpowered [#948]

You need to mix more metaphor.

"There will be blood. Perhaps in the spring after the winter of our discontent. This is no country for old men. The dog will not bark at midnight when the emperor has no clothes"

I love how Ronbo has gone all Sans Culotte . Like he's itching to get into some pantaloons

They have responsible discourse. All of you babbling bloggers are here sentenced to 3 hours of FOX news(?) 6 to 9. Study the reactionaries. Is this the American Dream?

  5. BlinkyMcChuck [#202]

It's always weird to see Americans talk crap about how Europeans live. America has Stockholm Syndrome.

I would say that David Brooks can't possibly think, "The problem is that we’ve experienced a cognitive revolution," but then I mean he IS David Brooks. His understanding of economics is seriously a work of art.

Perhaps Hunter Thompson already kind of nailed the "Death of the American Dream" story a few decades ago and Gail Collins is actually talking about something else?

I think Gail is referring to the american dream as "americans are awesome and deserve to be rich" while Thompson was more concerned with the "americans are awesome and deserve their 60's idealism" kind of dream?

I don't know, but it's interesting that journalist's return to this story in so many different ways.

Dream all you want – it's reality that is the problem.

  9. Steve [#1777]

    What are American Dreamer's thoughts?

  10. withelectrolytes [#218]

    Those two are totally boning.

Why are these people constantly on the same page as Krugman?

Really. Can someone explain this to me?
